‘Working City’ Looks at Variety of Bicycle Traffic Markings
Green lanes, bike boxes, sharrows, cycle loop stencils, buffer strips - Eugene’s street surfaces offer a wealth of information
designed to let cyclists and motorists share the road safely. The latest episode of “Working City” shows five on-street bike
markings that are gaining popularity in Eugene and around the
country.
The four-and-a-half-minute video shows each marking in use and
explains in detail how the markings function to improve traffic
safety. Shorter versions of the video will be produced to appeal to
student audiences, to use as video public service announcements
and to complement the traffic safety web page (www.eugene-
or.gov/trafficsafety).
“Working City” is financed with Eugene’s telecom funds and is
produced as a public service through a joint effort involving City
staff and Metro Television. The traffic markings video can be
viewed on the City’s video web page or by going directly to
https://vimeo.com/90333432. It also airs on Comcast Cable
channel 21 (check the Metro TV schedule for times). For more

City of Eugene staff, community partners, and volunteers are creating an educational and motivational agenda to engage
attendees of the 2014 Neighborhoods, USA conference, May 21 - 24, at the Eugene Hilton.
This year’s theme is “Growing Community – Hand in Hand” and the members of the planning committees have put together
an exciting conference line-up. Innovative workshops, presentations, renowned keynote speakers and unique
Neighborhood Pride Tours will showcase Eugene’s commitment to social justice and environmental sustainability.
Throughout the planning process, the steering team has thoughtfully embraced the community’s value of balancing the
triple bottom line. The team will not only serve up a sustainable event this year, but also provide a framework for future
events to follow.
Programs track highlight themes such as food security and urban agriculture, town/gown relationships, and building
caring and safe communities through implementation of creative, community-based programs that proactively respond to
concerns.
World class keynote speakers will inspire and educate attendees to put their visions into action. For example, Strategic
Advisor and Transformation Catalyst Michele Hunt, whose client list includes IBM, Motorola, and NASA was appointed by

President Bill Clinton as Director of the Federal Quality Institute, a part of the bi-partisan Reinventing Government
initiative. Her presentation will lead participants through the shared-visioning process used successfully by leaders in
business, government, and grass-root communities.
City employees are encouraged to review the program material and, with supervisor approval, to attend. Additionally,
there are many opportunities to participate in the event as a volunteer on behalf of the conference host, the City of Eugene,
as well as scholarships and work-trade positions for local attendees.

Annual Book Sale Raises Funds for Eugene Public Library
Book lovers: shop for a good cause! The Friends of Eugene Public Library annual book sale will be held Saturday, Apr. 12,
from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, Apr. 13, from10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Lane Events Center (Lane County Fairgrounds)
Performance Hall.
Proceeds from this all-volunteer project go to support Eugene Public Library
classes, programs, and events, including Summer Reading for children and teens.
Admission and parking are free.
Shoppers will be able to choose from thousands of gently used and like-new books
on all topics, at bargain prices of only $1 to $2. Also for sale will be DVDs, audio
books, sheet music, and a huge choice of music CDs. Recent bestsellers will be
available in the Good as New section, and collectors can check for rare and
specialty books in the Individually Priced section. A Children's area will offer a
large selection of books, DVDs, and CDs for kids. VISA/Mastercard will be accepted,
as will cash and checks.
The book sale is the Friends of Eugene Public Library's major fundraiser each year. More than 300 volunteers work on the
book sale, many year-round.

Job Skills Jam Readies Teens for Employment
Recreation Services and Human Resources have teamed up to present “Jobs Skills Jam” for high school teens on Apr. 10.
Each year, Recreation recruits dozens of volunteers to assist with its more than 150 summer camps and the hundreds of
kids who flock to the pools and participate in its outdoor programs and
other summer activities.
Unlike a jobs fair, attendees at the Job Skills Jam will not be applying for
summer employment. Instead, the event is intended to encourage teens to
volunteer for a Recreation program. With the experience, skills, and
connections they gain as a volunteer, they will be better prepared to
compete successfully for an entry-level job with the City or another
organization in the future.
At the Jobs Skills Jam, teens will learn about volunteer opportunities
available this summer in these Recreation programs:
River House Outdoor Program Ȇ
solid skills in outdoor recreation, including rafting, kayaking, sailing,
skiing, hiking, and challenge course facilitation.
Aquatics Programs – At Amazon, Echo Hollow and Sheldon pools and fitness centers, volunteers are needed to help
with special events and to assist instructors in the learn-to-swim programs.
Teen Court Ȇs 12 - 17 serve as jurors, case presenters, defendant advisors, court clerks and bailiffs, and
Spanish-language interpreters. Volunteers attend hearings and recommend consequences for first-time juvenile
offenders, and help their peers accept responsibility for crimes, using the concept of restorative justice.
Recreation Classes and Summer Camps - at Peterson Barn and Amazon community centers, volunteers are needed to
help with child care programs, summer camps, field trips and special events, working with individuals from age two-
and-a-half to adults.

Human Resources staff will help attendees at the Job Skills Jam with tips on resume writing, completing job applications,
being interviewed, etc. Job Skills Jam will be held from 3:15 – 5:00 p.m., on Thursday, Apr. 10, at Echo Hollow Pool. For
