What’s Your Favorite Park?
In recognition of Kids to Parks Day on May 17, two City of Eugene divisions, Parks and Open Space and Recreation, are
sponsoring an essay contest. Children between the ages of five and 13 could win a 30-day Family Pass to Amazon Pool just
for writing about their favorite Eugene Park! Winning essayists will also receive an
award certificate and their essay will be read aloud by Mayor Kitty Piercy at a City
Council meeting and published in the Fall Recreation Guide.
Children should enter in the five- to nine-years-old or 10- to 13-years-old division.
Entries will be judged on originality, creativity, grammar, and spelling. All essays
should include the answers to at least two of these three questions:
What is your favorite Eugene Park?
What do you like to do there?
How do you think we could get more kids outside to play?
An official essay entry form is available at www.eugene-or.gov/pos or any City
community center or pool. Entries may be submitted by mail, hand delivery or
email, but must be received by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13. See the entry form for

Small Business Support at Eugene Public Library
The Eugene Public Library offers a wide variety of valuable assistance to local business people, free of charge, including
programs providing expert advice on a variety of topics. Often, events are co-sponsored by community and non-profit
partners including Lane Community College Small Business Development Center and SCORE:
Counselors to America's Small Business.
In May, Roger Wong will cover the critical points to consider when thinking about opening a
restaurant, coffee shop, or food cart. His talk - How to Start a Restaurant, Coffee Shop, or
Food Cart - at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, at the Downtown Library, can help turn goals into
reality -- or help participants realize that the restaurant business may not be for them.
On Thursday, May 11, at 6 p.m., Kathleen Gage will teach Marketing Your Business: Visibility,
Reach, Revenues, at the Downtown Library. Learn proven strategies to effectively market a
business for success -- without going broke in the process. Gage will explain how to position
a message in today's exceptionally competitive business environment, beginning with
identifying ideal clients and articulating one’s particular expertise.

At the Small Business Clinic, business owners can get one-on-one advice and mentoring. Participants may sign up in
advance at 541-682-5450 for a no-cost, individual, and confidential 30-minute session with a SCORE counselor to address
the issues most important to one’s business right now. Sessions will be offered on Thursday, May 1, and Thursday, May 29,
with appointments between 5 and 7 p.m.

Bethel Education Foundation Loves Food, Not Waste!
The City of Eugene and Bethel Education Foundation (BEF) are teaming up to support Bethel students through the sale of
Love Food Not Waste (LFNW) bagged compost. In celebration of International Compost Awareness Week (the first week of
May), BEF will hold its first annual compost sale on Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. - 3p.m. at all Bethel School District
schools. Bags can be pre-ordered online or purchased the day of the event from any school location. In addition to the
compost sale, select locations will also host:
Tours of school gardens and onsite composting systems
Raffles for items donated by participating LFNW businesses
Children’s educational activities sponsored by local community groups including Master Gardeners, School Garden
Project, and Partners for Sustainable Schools
Bethel Education Foundation enhances and invests in educational excellence in the Bethel School District by securing and
distributing charitable contributions that enrich educational opportunities for students. For more information, contact
