Formerly a working cattle and horse farm, the site was the family home of Oregon Senator Wayne Morse who served in the U. S. Senate from l944 to1968. Today it is a 26- acre, multi-use city park listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The annual open house, sponsored by the Wayne Morse Historical Park Corporation, will include house tours, the famous political cartoons exhibit highlighting Senator Morse’s opposition to the Vietnam War, Oregon Public Broadcasting’s “Wayne Morse,” a 30-minute documentary, marimba bands, and an ice cream social. The Wayne Morse Family farm is located at 595 Crest Drive. To get there, take Willamette Street south to 32Avenue; turn right onto Crest Drive and drive a nd half-mile up the hill. Metro TV and SmartTrips Team Up to Win Telly Award A “Working City” video about Eugene’s SmartTrips program has won a bronze award in the 35 Telly competition. The 4:19 minute video was produced by Metro Television in July th 2013. Metro TV Channel 21 is provided as a community benefit through the Comcast Cable TV rights-of-way use agreement managed by the City’s Telecommunications Program (Information Services Division). Telecommunications program staff members support Metro TV in showcasing its work for awards such as this and are pleased when exceptional programming about the City’s efforts receives national recognition. The SmartTrips video explains the innovative and effective incentive program developed by the City’s Transportation Planning team in the Public Works Engineering Division. In the program, Transportation Options program coordinator Lindsay Selser and former intern Moorea Strueby explain that even small amounts of informational tools and resources can convince people to walk, ride bikes or take the bus. This, in turn, allows them to rediscover their neighborhoods, save money, and improve their health. The Telly Awards annually showcases the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators, and corporate video departments in the world. The Telly Awards receives over 12,000 entries annually from all 50 states and many foreign countries. Inspectors Provide On-Site Advice at Home Improvement Stores When entering a home or any other building, one is most likely not thinking about whether it is properly constructed and safe. Fortunately, local safety experts think about building safety and fire prevention every day. To raise awareness of building safety, the City of Eugene is celebrating Building Safety Month during May. Last year, the City of Eugene’s Building Inspection Team conducted over 3,900 inspections of new construction and remodels every month – about 180 per day. In honor of Building Safety Month, Eugene building inspectors and staff will answer questions and provide information about building permits at four local home improvement stores from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 10. It will also be an opportunity to view the new “mobile office” building inspection van that brings the tools usually associated with an office to the job site where the construction takes place. Staff will be available at:  Jerry’s Home Improvement Center, 2600 Highway 99 North  Home Depot, 808 Seneca Road  Home Depot, 1045 Green Acres Road  Lowe’s Home Improvement, 3595 West 11 Avenue th First observed in 1980 as Building Safety Week, Building Safety Month is sponsored by the International Code Council, an organization dedicated to building safety and fire prevention. The International Code Council maintains the codes used to safely construct most buildings, including homes, factories, offices and schools. The building safety codes are uniform across every community and county in Oregon as well as being adopted by most U.S. cities and counties. Event Puts Hard Work in a Fun Context Public Works Day is Thursday, May 15, and City Council members are invited to see what Eugene Public Works is all about in a fun and educational format. The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Public Works Roosevelt Yard, 1820 Roosevelt Boulevard. More than 1,100 local schoolchildren have signed up for the event, which features equipment, displays, and booths that offer hands-on opportunities to learn about Public Works services such as the Eugene Airport, stormwater and wastewater management, road design and repair, park construction and maintenance, traffic operations, and much more. Also in conjunction with the annual event, the Public Works Department is working with two elementary schools – Adams and Willagillespie – to have students paint art on snow plow blades. The blades will be on display at Public Works Day and also will be used if there are any winter storms over the next year (last year’s painted blades got quite a bit of exposure during the December and February storms). The local event also ties into National Public Works Week organized by the American Public Works Association. Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber recently issued a proclamation about the importance of public works services to Oregon communities. To avoid the crush of school kids, early afternoon drop-ins are recommended for community members to bring their children or attend as adults and have a chance to meet many of the people who provide public works services in this community. EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 2 May 8, 2014 Explore Your Family Tree at Eugene Public Library Participants can start exploring their family trees at “Intro to Online Genealogy,” a hands-on-computer-keyboard class at the Downtown Eugene Public Library on Thursday, May 22, at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free. Get an introduction to premium online tools available free through the Eugene Public Library including Ancestry, HeritageQuest, and the Info Hub at the Library’s website. Participants will also learn about recommended Internet sites including USGenweb, Rootsweb, Family Search and Cyndi’s List. The Eugene Public Library offers a variety of classes to assist community members in making the most of current technology. Sessions focus on how to download free ebooks and audiobooks to iPads, Kindles, Nooks, phones, and other devices; editing, sharing, and storing digital photos; consumer travel information; successful Internet searching, and more.
