ISSUE STATEMENT
The City of Eugene has been awarded a Bicycle Friendly Community Award by the League of
American Bicyclists (LAB), a national bicycle advocacy organization. Sue Wolling, chair of the Eugene
Bicycle Coalition, will present Mayor Torrey with the award on behalf of the LAB.
BACKGROUND
The league' s Bicycle Friendly Community Campaign is a national grassroots effort to increase the
number of trips made by bicycle, promote physical fitness, and help make communities more livable.
The Bicycle Friendly Community designation honors the commitment of the award-winning
communities to provide safe accommodation and facilities for bicyclists, and recognizes their efforts to
encourage bicycling for fun, fitness, and transportation. Eugene is the fifth city in Oregon to be awarded
the Bicycle Friendly Communities award, joining Corvallis, Portland, Beaverton, and Ashland.
Eugene, the highest ranked community receiving an award this year, received a "silver" level award.
According to the LAB, winning evidence of the city's long-term commitment to bicycling includes a
5.5% bicycle mode share, innovative facilities, top-notch education programs for youth, and effective
encouragement programs. Eugene has incorporated bicycling into City policies to ensure future
development will accommodate and enhance bicycling. In addition, Eugene boasts a combination of on-
and off-road bicycle facilities, ample downtown bicycle parking, bicycle education and training in
middle school PE classes, a summer-long encouragement program (People Powered Fridays), and the
Business Bicycle Challenge.
