Mayor, Councilors to Be Honored at Bee-Fest
At the family-friendly Bee-Fest celebration on Saturday, May 31,
Beyond Toxics will honor Mayor Kitty Piercy and City Councilors
Claire Syrett and Mike Clark for their leadership in making Eugene
“America’s bee-friendliest city!”
The event is at Washington Park Community Center from 1 - 3 p.m.
Beyond Toxics and event sponsor, Smith Family Bookstore, invite the
public to enjoy live music by the Zac Wolfe Band, “Scoops for a
Cause” dessert provided by Coconut Bliss, face-painting, professional
balloon twister, Angela, with Young at Heart Balloon Art, open mic
poetry readings and much more.

Seeking Applicants for Young Women’s Summer Fire Camp
The fire service is looking for energetic young women interested in learning more about fire services. Eugene Springfield
Fire is hosting the fourth annual Young Women’s Fire Camp. The camp is being held from Monday, July 7, through Friday,
July 11, at the Emergency Services Training Center at 2 and Chambers in Eugene. This is a free day camp for young

women between the ages of 15 and19, designed as a “mini” fire academy with a focus on teamwork, and building
confidence and leadership skills in a fire-based environment. Activities will include rope-rappelling, vehicle extrication,
forcible entry, live firefighting and emergency medical response scenarios.
Each day at lunchtime, female leaders from the community will speak with the camp participants. Last year’s camp was
very successful, and everyone involved had a lot of fun. Please help get the word out to the young women in the community
about this unique opportunity.

Teen Court Restorative Justice Program Featured on “Working City”
For nearly 17 years, Eugene Recreation Services has been the home of a unique and effective restorative justice program
for youth between the ages of 12 and 17. As authorized by the Lane County Division of Youth Services, Teen Court gives
young defendants an alternative way to take responsibility for their unlawful
choices and to be accountable. Upon the successful completion of their sentence,
teen defendants can become eligible to have the citation expunged from their
juvenile record.
Teen Court also provides a number of great volunteer opportunities for teens that
live in the Bethel and West Eugene areas. Volunteers are trained by adult staff to
serve as jurors, defendant advisors, case presenters, bailiffs, and court clerks for
sentencing hearings in which a teen jury decides on restorative consequences for
youth who have broken the law. Additionally, local attorneys volunteer as judges
who preside over the legal aspects of Teen Court hearings, though the restorative
consequences involved in a sentence are determined strictly by teen jury members.
Metro TV’s Working City program is currently airing a segment on Eugene’s Teen
Court. In the video, teen volunteers conduct a mock trial to demonstrate how Teen Court works and a local business owner,
who has been the victim of juvenile crime, advocates for the program.
Eugene’s Teen Court contributes to greater safety in the community, creates significant cost-savings in the juvenile justice
system, and empowers youth and adults to partner together to resolve teen crime in a positive way. To watch the Working

Compost Fundraiser A Success!
Through a partnership with the Love Food Not Waste commercial compost program, the Bethel
Education Foundation (BEF) raised over $3,000 at its first annual compost sale on May 10.
The event was a huge success, thanks to over 50 volunteers, including students, staff, BEF board
members, parents, and more. Over 750 bags of 100-percent recycled food scrap compost were sold
at 10 Bethel school locations. Bethel Education Foundation enhances and invests in educational
excellence in the Bethel School District by securing and distributing charitable contributions that
enrich educational opportunities for students.
