Project Successfully Controls Aquatic Weeds
For the second year, the Parks and Open Space Division has been
awarded a grant from the Oregon State Weed Board (OSWB) and Oregon
Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB) to control an aggressive, non-
native, aquatic weed at Delta Ponds and Golden Gardens.
Uruguayan primrose-willow, or Ludwigia hexapetala (Ludwigia), grows
so densely that it threatens fish and wildlife habitat. Prior to treatment,
the populations of Ludwigia at Delta Ponds and Golden Gardens were
among the highest in the Willamette Valley watershed and were
threatening downstream waterways, including the Willamette River. In
2013, OSWB funded implementation of phase one of the “Invasive
Ludwigia Management Plan,” which outlines a multi-year strategy to
eradicate Ludwigia. This year’s funding will allow the City to implement a
second phase of Ludwigia control.
Since Ludwigia naturally goes dormant in the fall, the true impact of the
2013 control efforts was unknown until the last few weeks. Initial
observations this season have revealed that efforts were successful and
that Ludwigia populations are much less dense than the previous year.
Parks and Open Space Division’s Ludwigia control effort last year was the
first large-scale treatment of Ludwigia hexapetala in the state. It has now
become the model for other projects across the Willamette Valley. It is
anticipated that with the 2014 efforts, the City of Eugene will continue to
be the regional leader in efforts to successfully control this rapidly
expanding weed.

City Pools Open Monday for Summer Recreation Swims
Summer unofficially begins at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 16, when the City’s three swimming
pools open for recreational swims. Amazon Pool is a favorite summer site, annually
drawing more than 150,000 visits from June through September. All three City pools will
offer a FREE Summer Kick-off Recreational Swim on Friday, June 20. Amazon Pool is
expected to draw more than 1,500 visitors that day. During heavy use times, such as
recreational swims, more than 25 lifeguards will be on duty to ensure safety and fun for all.
The City’s two other pools are open year-round. Echo Hollow Pool and Fitness Center has
an indoor and outdoor pool, and Sheldon Pool and Fitness Center has one indoor pool.

The free swim on June 20 will be from 2 - 6 p.m. at Amazon Pool, 1:10 - 3:40 p.m. at Echo Hollow Pool, and 1:40 - 3:40 p.m.
at Sheldon Pool. New this summer, Amazon Pool is offering coed water volleyball and Echo Hollow is offering “Try a
Triathlon” training. All pools offer lap swimming, and swim lessons, water fitness, and competitive swimming; Sheldon and
Echo Hollow Pools also have fully equipped fitness centers.

Fun Shows Kick off Summer for Kids at Eugene Public Library
Summer Reading at the Eugene Public Library is all about learning and laughs! Get started
with Curt Nelson’s Science Magic Show at the Downtown Library on Tuesday, June 24, at
1 and 3 p.m.; at Bethel Branch Library on Wednesday, June 25, 3 p.m.; or at Sheldon
Branch Library on Thursday, June 26, at 3 p.m. Admission is free.
The giggles keep coming with zany jokes and amazing stunts at Rhys Thomas’
JuggleMania show on Friday, June 27, at 1 and 3 p.m. at the Downtown Library.
Also at all locations children can sign up for Summer Reading and choose a free book to
keep. Parents can sign up for Summer Reading for Adults to get a Friends of the Library
tote bag, plus a free cup of coffee at Novella Cafe or $1 off on a purchase at Second Hand
Prose Book Store.
