The WJ - Skateboarding and a Whole Lot More!
The much anticipated grand opening of the WJ Skatepark + Urban Plaza is Saturday, June 21. The events planned for the
day demonstrate that the new venue is not only a great location for skateboarding, but for a wide variety of other activities,
as well. At 10 a.m., four events will be presented simultaneously: Eugene Recreation
will provide free skateboard lessons; the Safe Routes to Schools Program will provide
free learn-to-bike lessons; KIDSPORTS and the City of Eugene will present the first
Annual Washington Jefferson Street 3-on-3 Invitational Basketball Tournament, and
Eugene Bike Polo will host the first Annual Polo Trolls Bike Polo Tournament.
The dedication ceremony officially opening the park will be held at 1:00 p.m. with
expected speakers Mayor Kitty Piercy, Skaters for Eugene Skateparks board member
Janet Brown, and mural artist Esteban Camacho. All-day events include KidZone
activities, a helmet give-away (while supplies last), food and retail booths, in addition to
community booths offering interactive fun, and booth bingo with prizes.
Beginning at 1:30 p.m., attendees can drop in to play horseshoes while they listen to
music by Sol Seed. Kidical Mass leads a bike ride through the Whitaker neighborhood at
2:00 p.m., and there will be a free skate until 3:00 p.m. Music by Lafa Taylor begins at 3:30 p.m., and, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.,
experienced skaters will demonstrate their skills, followed by a skate competition sponsored by Tactics Boardshop. From
4:30 – 6:30 p.m., Sol Seed will perform live music, followed by a performance by Strange Vice that will wrap up the event at
8:00 p.m.
The strong public-private partnership between the City of Eugene, Eugene Parks Foundation, Skaters for Eugene
Skateparks and the Rotary Club of Eugene that resulted in the WJ Skatepark + Urban Plaza also provided the community
with a new, versatile venue for everyone to enjoy.

Teen Summer Reading at Eugene Public Library
The free Teen Summer Reading program at the Eugene Public Library helps local
middle and high school students keep their reading skills up while school’s out.
Plus, Summer Reading is a great way to learn new things, make new friends, and
have fun!
Teens can visit any Eugene public library location – Downtown, Sheldon, or Bethel
- to sign up and pick up a calendar of free events. At sign-up, each teen gets to
choose a free book to keep, courtesy of the Friends of the Library. Teens can also
enter a free raffle for gift certificates by writing book reviews at the Library
website.

The summer is filled with activities for teens at all Library locations, including hands-on art, crafts, writing workshops,
movies, gaming, and a talent show.
