Interviews for Boards and Commissions

COUNCILORS PRESENT: George Poling, Scott Meisner, David Kelly, Betty Taylor, Gary Pap&
COUNCILORS ABSENT: Nancy Nathanson, Bonny Bettman, Jennifer Solomon.
Council Vice President George Poling called the meeting of the Eugene City Council to order.
A. INTERVIEWS FOR BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS
The council interviewed candidates for positions on the Planning Commission and Human Rights Commis-
sion. Candidates for the Planning Commission positions included Greg Ringer and Phillip Hudspeth.
Candidates for the Human Rights Commission included Juan Monjaras, Ibrahim Hamide, Misa Joo, David
Lawrence, Andrea Smith, Anne Johnston-Diaz, Andy Rodrigues, Judith Castro, Azra Khalidi, and Elizabeth
Aydelott.
Mr. Poling greeted each candidate in mm and informed them that the councilors who were unable to attend
the meeting would listen to tapes of the interviews.
All candidates for the Planning Commission positions were asked the following questions:
1. ~/hy did you apply for the Planning Commission and what do you hope to contribute? Do you see
yourself'as representing any particular point of view or group?
2. ~ffhat is your experience working with a group effectively and especially with regard to long
processes? Have you had prior experience working with groups in a collective manner?
3. In your opinion, which issue should be given the highest priority by the Planning Commission
over the next four years? ~/hy do you consider this the most important issue?
4. The Planning Commission must often balance competing interests when developing planning
documents and making land use decisions. In your opinion, what are the most important factors
for the Planning Commission to consider in its decision making?
5. Please share your views on how the Planning Commission can foster involvement of the whole
community in long-range planning projects.
All candidates for the Human Rights Commission positions were asked the following questions:

1. I/ghat, in your opinion, is City government's role in addressing human rights?
2. IZFho do you consider to be the most vulnerable communities in Eugene and why? I/ghat do you
feel are the most important issues facing members of those vulnerable communities and what are
your ideas for addressing those issues?
3. Please give an example of a conflict situation you 'ye been in and how you resolved it.
4. We recognize that many people apply to serve on the Human Rights Commission because they are
passionate for a particular group or a specific issue. It's important that commissioners have the
ability to work on a range of human rights issues. Assess your ability to work with others on is-
sues that may not be your top concern.
5. I4Zhat 's the one thing you appreciate about Eugene and what's one thing you find irritating and
would like to change and why?
At the conclusion of each interview, Mr. Poling informed candidates that the council would make its
appointments at the council meeting of November 8, 2004.
The meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m.
