Free Family Fun and Learning at Eugene Public Library
School-year activities are returning to the Eugene Public Library, including free events for children and families.
Every Sunday at 2:30 p.m., there’s something new to do at the Downtown Library. On Oct. 5, celebrate Latino Heritage
Month! Antonio Huerta will perform charreria rope tricks and share some history.
Plus, get creative with Jessica Zapata of Eugene Arte Latino. The celebration
continues on Oct.12, with traditional Ecuadorian music and dance performed by
Sol de los Andes.
On Oct. 19, join Kelly Terwilliger for “Stories of Stones,” a show of tales about
magical pebbles, talking boulders, and more. Then, create a home for your own pet
rock. On Oct. 26, enjoy time together learning and playing board games with Chris
Wuebbles.
Also, back by popular demand: Dog Tale Time, every Saturday, 2 - 3:30 p.m. Dog
Tale Time is a free opportunity for children from kindergarten to sixth-grade to
build skills by reading to friendly, trained dogs in 15-minute, one-on-one sessions. Pre-registration begins one week in
advance of each event at 541-682-8316.

Parent/Child Activities Strengthen Family
Recreation Services offers a variety of activities that are for both parent and child. These classes are an important way the
division supports strong family ties, builds community, and ensures accessible and thriving recreation and culture.
Research has demonstrated that families are strengthened when each member
has a role and responsibility. In Recreation, it’s about including everyone in
the task or the fun.
Ceramics classes offered at Amazon Community Center are one example.
Family Fun with Clay is open to the whole family. All family members can
make useful items like bowls or fun items like monsters. These self-made
objects become treasured remembrances of family togetherness.
Two other ceramics classes offered this fall, expressly for parent and child,
teach family members how to make Halloween decorations or holiday
ornaments. Master potters teach these classes, providing valuable direction
that helps build new creative skills for parent and child.
Other Recreation classes for parents and children include dancing, martial arts, Movie Nights at Amazon, Family Fun Nights
at Petersen Barn, Sheldon Center’s Super Sale, Shred and Swim, and Family Fit Friday. The Outdoor Program offers many

activities specifically designed for the whole family such as Family Afternoon Raft, and, in the Aquatics Program, parents
are encouraged to participate in swim lessons for very young children as well as in recreation swims.

City of Eugene Highlighted in New State of Oregon Broadband Video
City of Eugene broadband planning efforts are highlighted, and Planning & Development staff interviewed, in a State of
Oregon video production depicting Oregon municipal models of broadband planning.
The City of Eugene applied for and was awarded a technical assistance grant to bring community stakeholders together to
review four major areas of broadband focus:
Deployment, inclusion and adoption
Education technology
Community development and service delivery
Economic opportunity
The Eugene Community Broadband Strategic Plan final report of that work is at
http://www.oregonbroadbandplanning.org/About-the-Project/. Two Oregon Broadband Outreach and Strategic Planning
Project videos have just been released and posted on the Oregon Business Development Department YouTube channel:

The videos will air on government and community television channels in Oregon and municipal staff are invited to view
and share the videos. The videos can also be downloaded on DVDs or flash drives for viewing at conferences or meetings,
or provided to interested parties.
