Outdoor Program Opens Door to Nature in Winter
Recreation Services’ Outdoor Program makes it easy for residents to enjoy nature in winter by offering classes in cross-
country skiing. Individuals new to the activity can enroll in the Level I Touring class, where they will learn the skills needed
for competent cross-country skiing, on and off the trail: slide, glide, turn and stop.
Those with some experience can enroll in the Level II class, which has been called
“the confidence builder,” because it’s designed to help students develop control on
hills and efficiency on the flats. Space is still available in either class; both are offered
on Jan. 17, and repeated on Feb. 7.
To ensure that participants are prepared for the day-long outing, both classes
require attendance at a pre-trip meeting from 7 - 9 p.m., on the Wednesday before
the outing, where they will learn what to wear, how to wax skis and make
emergency repairs, and more.
Students should rent equipment for either class. The $49 fee includes instruction,
transportation to the mountain, and trail passes. For more information, call Roger

Public Works Annual Report Published Online
The FY 2014 Public Works Annual Report is now available online (printed copies of the report will be distributed to the
Mayor and City Council in early February).
The 20-page report is designed to be reader-friendly, with lots of photographs
and short articles structured around the department’s evolving strategic plan.
This mirrors the change the department made in its FY15 work plan to better
connect with the strategic plan’s five goals: develop, support and retain an
exceptionally qualified, healthy and well-trained work force to thrive in a
changing world; establish sustainable funding for public works services; build
and provide a full range of transportation options; protect, maintain and improve
natural and built infrastructure; and strengthen internal and external working
relationships.
As the Public Works Director notes in the report’s introduction, “From street and
utility improvements to record-setting passenger levels at the Eugene Airport to
award-winning capital projects, we share in the mission of ‘making lives better
through the services we provide each day.’”

One-on-One Job-Hunting Help at Eugene Public Library
New at the Downtown Eugene Public Library: One-on-One Job-Hunting Help. At these sessions, job-hunters will get
individual, expert advice and assistance to address specific questions and concerns.
Employment counselors can help participants find employment opportunities, complete applications, write online and
traditional resumes, learn and practice interview techniques, or explore new job or career directions.
Sign up in advance for individual 30-minute appointments by calling 541-682-5450. Appointments will be available
between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8; Thursday, Jan. 22; Thursday, Feb. 12; and Thursday, Feb. 26.
