Public Works Picnic: Planning and Purchasing Prevents Waste
The Public Works annual picnic was a success! Employees enjoyed good food, and great fun with a minimal waste
footprint. Public Works staff partnered with the Waste Prevention program to plan for waste reduction opportunities
well in advance of the event. In order to do this, Public Works
rented ClearStream Recycling bins from the internal Zero Waste
program, allowing for quick and easy separation of recyclables,
compost, and garbage by event attendees.
Additionally, picnic organizers clearly labeled food waste and
compostable ware collection bins; carefully purchased certified
compostable plates, utensils and bin liner bags, plain paper
portion cups and standard waxed paper cups - all of which were
collected in the compost bins and then transported to Public
Works food waste collection point at Roosevelt Yard after the
picnic.
PW Civil Engineer Patrick Cox led the mission to make certain
that truly compostable products that comply with Love Food Not
Waste were purchased. “We used compostable everything. The waste bins only received things like the plastic wrap
used on cases of canned goods for the picnic and small amounts of garbage that folks brought with them.” Public Works
also connected with Lane County Waste Management’s Master Recycler program for assistance monitoring the waste
stream at the event, and to ensure that Zero Waste efforts were a success.

Humor and Youth Talent Show at Library
Learn to laugh stress away at a free talk by Ned Hickson, author of “Humor at the Speed of
Life." Join in the fun on Saturday, Aug. 15, at 3 p.m., at the Downtown Eugene Public Library.
Hickson claims, “In this age of distraction and multi-tasking, humor is an instant ticket to less
stress and a healthy sense of perspective. Plus, everyone can do it!” A humor columnist for
Siuslaw News, Hickson has been awarded “Best Local Column” by the Oregon Newspaper
Publishers Association and the Society of Professional Journalists. His syndicated weekly
column appears in dozens of U.S. newspapers.
On Thursday, Aug. 20, at 5 p.m., everyone’s invited to the Downtown Eugene Public Library to enjoy Eugene’s Got
Talent, a free variety show performed by kids and teens. Auditions for the show will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at

MovingAhead Team Seeks Input on Transportation Corridor Concepts
The City of Eugene and Lane Transit District thanks everyone who participated in the MovingAhead workshops in May
or who provided input online. More than 200 community members attended MovingAhead workshops, and many
others submitted comments or spoke with project staff at a community event or meeting.
At the workshops, participants tested different combinations of bike
lanes, sidewalks, lanes for autos, and lanes for buses. Using the input
gathered at the workshops, the project team has developed 14
concepts for how transit, sidewalk, and bike facilities could be
improved in each corridor.
More opportunities to provide input are available for people to
comment on the concepts, including an online survey at
www.MovingAhead.org and an open house at the Eugene Library on
Sept. 14, from 4 - 6 pm. Submit comments now to help shape the future
of key corridors: Coburg Road, River Road, Highway 99, Amazon
Parkway to Lane Community College, Valley River Center and Martin
Community Workshop
Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
