EUGENE SUNDAY STREETS SURPASSES PREVIOUS YEARS
AROUND THE CITY
Eugene Sunday Streets Surpasses Previous Years
Eugene Sunday Streets (ESS) Friendly exploded with activity this past Sunday, Sept. 20. Eugene Sunday Streets Friendly
surpassed previous neighborhood ESS events with over 3,100 participants. Combined attendance for the two ESS
events in 2015 was a record 7,100.
Whether on foot, unicycle, wheel chair or trike, the almost
two-mile Friendly neighborhood route allowed access to
four dynamic activity centers, each buzzing with its own
flavor. The involvement from Friendly area neighbors,
including those who live on the route, as well as The
Friendly Market & Deli and route businesses, helped make
this possible.
With no specific end or beginning, the route meandered
from Friendly Park (27 & Friendly) to the Common Ground

Garden (21 & Van Buren). The streets that joined the

activity centers were dotted with neighbors having garage
sales, lemonade stands, fruit pressing and crafts. The
Common Ground Garden welcomed participants to
experience composting, garden tours, and treats from their
bake sale. The food, garden and neighborhood theme
carried throughout this route hub, with Eugene Veg
Education Network, Love Food Not Waste and the Friendly
Area Neighbors historical booth. This was the first Eugene
Sunday Streets that focused on creating a waste-free event
with help from master recyclers and use of compostable
service ware.

Adams Elementary and Friendly Park were filled with vendors offering free massages, brain games, soccer instruction,
helmet decorating, live music and more. A big hit at Friendly was the free fitness offerings from Oakway Fitness Center,
including a Zumba class that filled the streets with dozens of participants clapping and dancing in the afternoon sun.
Local bicycle shops – Arriving By Bike and Eugene Electrical Bicycles – offered participants an opportunity to ride the
route with pedal-assist bikes, making hills easy and hauling cargo simple.
Looking ahead to Eugene Sunday Streets 2016, community input is greatly appreciated. An online survey at
www.eugene-or.gov/esssurvey lets respondents indicate where they would like the next event to be, what bands they
would like to hear, and other preferences.
