Fire Department and EWEB Create Video on Fire Hydrant Testing
Eugene Springfield Fire, in partnership with Eugene Water & Electric Board
(EWEB), has created a video detailing the Fire Department’s role in testing fire
hydrants. Fire hydrants are a critical tool in protecting life and property, so it is
important that each one is checked regularly to ensure they are all in good working
order. There are almost 5,000 hydrants in the EWEB water system and Eugene
Springfield Fire conducts regular testing on an ongoing basis.

Parks and Open Space Division Recognized for Management of Ridgeline Park and Trail
From the initial grassroots acquisition effort for Spencer Butte in the 1930s, the citizens of Eugene have had a place in their
hearts for the ridgeline in south Eugene. For decades, the City’s Parks and Open Space Division (POS) has successfully
grown and managed this area for the community’s
enjoyment. The City manages over 2,000 acres of
Douglas-fir forest, oak savanna, and prairie habitats
and 16 miles of trail. The recently renovated summit
trail on Spencer Butte melds the community’s
desires to provide recreation opportunities and to
protect rare habitats like those found on the butte.
The Oregon Parks and Recreation Association
(ORPA) has recognized this vision, and POS’s
management of the habitat and trail assets in the
Ridgeline, by awarding the 2015 Asset
Management Award to the City of Eugene’s Parks
and Open Space Division. A team of staff from POS
will receive the award on Nov. 2in Portland during
the annual ORPA conference.
As a requirement to receive the award, Parks and
Open Space produced a video about the ridgeline and the work POS has done (https://vimeo.com/142417154). Looking
ahead, the City’s Parks and Open Space Division will continue to work with Rivers to Ridges partners to deliver on a vision
of a connected network of trails and natural areas in the southern Willamette Valley from the foothills of the coast range to
the foothills of the Cascades.

City Staff and Partners Collaborate to Make Presidential Visit Safe and Successful
President Barack Obama visited the Eugene Airport on Oct. 9 on his way to Roseburg to help comfort grieving families and
the community in the wake of the tragedy at Umpqua Community College. Mayor Kitty Piercy was honored to greet the
President at the airport. Senators Jeff Merkley andRon Wyden, and
Congressman Peter DeFazio also travelled with the President.
Accommodating the visit, including the arrival and departure of Air Force
One, Marine One, and other supporting aircraft, was a huge undertaking by
City of Eugene staff, business partners on the airfield, and community
partners. Participating staff were from the Eugene Airport, Eugene Police
Department, Central Services - including the City Manager’s Office, Public
Works Maintenance, and Eugene Springfield Fire Department. The U.S. Air
Force, U.S. Secret Service and White House staff expressed their
appreciation for all the work and cooperation needed to make the operation
go smoothly.
