Essex General Construction Named 2016 Bold Steps Award Winner
Essex General Construction was awarded the 2016 Bold Steps Award by Mayor Kitty Piercy at Eugene’s State of the City
event. The other finalists for the award were Mountain Rose Herbs and PIVOT Architecture.
The Bold Steps award, re-launched in 2014, recognizes Eugene-based
businesses operating with a triple bottom line, balancing the needs of people
and the planet with prosperity. The award represents a partnership between
the City of Eugene, Mayor Piercy, and BRING’s RE:think program.
Some of Essex General Construction’s triple bottom line efforts include:
In 2002, the company created a scholarship to assist employees in meeting
the cost of post-secondary education for themselves and their children.
Employees are also encouraged to become Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED)-accredited.
The company headquarters is in the process of fulfilling requirements to be
certified as a Trout Friendly Landscape. It will include native plants and edibles
such as blueberries and filberts.
Excess construction materials are donated to BRING Recycling and Habitat
for Humanity throughout the year.
Essex commits significant resources toward strategic planning. This allows
them to develop plans to ensure long-range stability and growth.
Essex General Construction will take the Bold Steps trophy back to their place of business to display for one year. A video

Streepey Named to League of Oregon Cities Committee
Finance Division staff member, Michael Streepey, has been appointed to the League of Oregon Cities (LOC) Finance and
Taxation Policy Committee. The LOC’s Finance and Taxation Policy Committee reviews policy decisions and recommends
legislative positions and strategies related to: property/income taxation, school finance, local government debt
instruments, infrastructure funding, public budgeting, state revenue sharing, and financing economic development.
In 2015, Streepey came to the City of Eugene from Washington, D.C., where he helped track, implement and develop state
fiscal policy issues. In preparation for the upcoming legislative session in Salem, Streepey noted that lawmakers are
reviewing a recent analysis on restructuring the state and local revenue system, including potential reforms to property
taxes.

Governor’s Transportation Vision Panel to Hold Lane County Forum
The Governor’s Transportation Vision Panel is a yearlong effort to develop a series of recommendations to Governor Kate
Brown that address transportation issues across all transportation modes and all regions of the state. Members of the
Vision Panel include legislators, business owners, and civic leaders from across Oregon. Under the leadership of Gov.
Brown, members of the Vision Panel have been charged with the following tasks: assess the current conditions of Oregon’s
transportation system; develop a long-term vision for the future of Oregon’s transportation system, and create a series
of recommendations that can be enacted in the near-term to lay the groundwork for this vision
The Governor’s Transportation Vision Panel is hosting a series of 11 regional forums across the state. These two-hour
forums provide an opportunity to seek local input and solutions to the regional needs and priorities of Oregon’s
transportation system. The Lane County forum will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Ford
Alumni Center at the University of Oregon.
At the forum, Vision Panel representatives will provide a brief overview of the panel’s preliminary findings to-date, and
lead a conversation to elicit participants’ perspectives on how the transportation system can support the region’s economic
needs and priorities. The Vision Panel will use regional forum participant input to refine its recommendations to the
Governor on the future of Oregon’s transportation system.
