Bettman, Mike Clark
COUNCILORS ABSENT: Alan Zelenka, George Poling
Council President Andrea Ortiz called the meeting of the Eugene City Council to order.
A. INTERVIEWS FOR BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS
The council interviewed Ruth Koenig, Mindy Frisbee, Mo Young, Jon Belcher, Linda Hamilton, and Twila
Souers for a position on the Human Rights Commission.
Ms. Ortiz greeted each candidate and explained the interview process. At the conclusion of each interview,
Ms. Solomon informed the candidate that the council would make its appointments at the October 22, 2007,
council meeting.
All candidates for the Human Rights Commission position were asked the following questions:
1. Why should you be chosen to be a Human Rights Commissioner?
2. What is the City government’s role in addressing human rights?
3. What are the most important human rights issues facing the City of Eugene and what are your
ideas for addressing those?
4. What do you think are the differences between volunteering for a community human rights group
and volunteering for the municipal human rights commission?
5. We recognize that many people apply to serve on the Human Rights Commission because they are
passionate for a particular group or a specific issue. It’s important that commissioners have the
ability to work on a range of human rights issues. Assess your ability to work with others on is-
sues that may not be your top concern.
6. Serving on the commission requires a significant time and energy commitment. Tell us about
your ability to balance commission work with other demands in your life.

Alan Zelenka.
COUNCILORS ABSENT: Bonny Bettman, George Poling.
A. BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS INTERVIEWS
The council interviewed applicants for positions on the City’s Sustainability Commission. Those inter-
viewed were William Klausmeier, Katherine Moyer, Tim Laue, Greg Youngquist, Will Shaver, Lynn
Rodrick, Fred Lea, Joseph Varner, Clayton Gauiter, Lorraine Kerword, Dawn Lesley, and Bob Cassidy.
Each applicant was asked the following questions:
1. What prompted you to apply for the Sustainability Commission? Based on what you know
about the role of the commission, what do you consider are the most important skills you
bring to help the commission be successful?
2. Please tell us about any experience you have had working collectively with a group.
3. What do you consider are the most important issues to address in Eugene to enable the com-
munity to become sustainable?
4. How can the Sustainability Commission be most effective in its role as a policy advisory body
to the City Council?
5. Please share your views on how the Sustainability Commission can foster involvement of the
whole community in long-range changes to become more sustainable.
Mr. Pryor thanked each candidate and indicated the council would be making a decision on the candidates to
be selected on October 22, 2007. He invited candidates to watch the meeting on their computers or
televisions.
