That’s when nearly 1,000 schoolchildren (and hundreds of accompanying adults) will be experiencing Eugene Public Works Day. The event runs from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 1820 Roosevelt Blvd. Councilors, neighborhood leaders, and all Eugene residents are invited to attend the free event. Lane Transit District will be providing free shuttle service between the downtown transit station and the Roosevelt Yard. This year the event organizing committee has three primary goals: promote Eugene Public Works as a caring, service-oriented organization in keeping with the theme of 2008 National Public Works Week: “The Future is Now”; educate young attendees in fun and memorable ways; and enhance camaraderie among Public Works staff. City of Eugene Public Works employees will be leading the kids on tours featuring all areas of the Public Works Department. Interactive activities at this year’s event include Kinder Critters from Nearby Nature, and Emergency Communications and Airport Security. The Equipment Rodeo will feature the latest and greatest in big work vehicles and machinery - a “big wow” for the kids. Imagine what fun it is for a kid to see how it feels to sit in the cab of a dump truck or pretend they’re driving a backhoe. Clean Stream expert Lily the Frog will also be making a special appearance. In addition to the one-day event at the Roosevelt Yard, Public Works staff has reached more than 500 local schoolchildren through in-class presentations this spring. All-Comers Hershey's Track and Field Games Now in Fourth Decade For more than 30 years, Eugene’s Youth and Family Services has partnered with the Hershey Company and local school districts to present the Hershey Track and Field Games each spring. This year, the event takes on special significance with the City hosting the 2008 US Olympic Track and Field Team Trials later this summer. One of the goals of the Local Olympic Organizing committee is to inspire youth to become more active, learn about track and field and perhaps become an athlete themselves! EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1 May 8, 2008 As always, the free Hershey Games invite youth ages 9-14 to compete in one of a series of meets. This year, the meets will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. on May 20, at Willamette High School; May 27 at North Eugene High School and May 29, at South Eugene High School. The games are free and participants register at the meet. Events include 50m, 100m, and 200m dash; 400m, 800m, and 1600m run; 400m relay; softball throw and long jump. Participants may compete in up to three events. The first place finishers at these meets will be invited to participate in the state meet on June 14 at Willamette High School. Cody to Appear on NBC’s Today Show Cody, Official Fire Safety Dalmatian, was part of a Today Show filming that took place Saturday, May 3, at the City's Emergency Services Center at 2nd and Chambers. The filming was part of an NBC feature (air date TBA) on Animal Assisted Crisis Response, a volunteer network of dog teams that are trained and certified to provide emotional comfort and support to persons who have been involved in crisis or disaster. As a member of AACR, Cody and his owner, Eugene Deputy Fire Marshal Amy Linder, traveled to Northern Illinois University earlier this year in the wake of a tragic shooting, offering their own brand of warmth and assurance to survivors, family members and first responders. Cody made a special point to go to the DeKalb Fire Station that responds to the NIU campus. He had lunch with the crews and a wonderful visit with our fire service brothers who responded to this event. Recently, Cody and Amy were selected as one of three teams to return to NIU to surprise students and staff that were being interviewed by the Today Show, and last weekend the show's cameras covered Cody and other AACR dogs participating in disaster simulation drills staged by Eugene Fire & EMS and recruited volunteers. In the drills, the dogs comforted individuals awaiting information at a Red Cross Service Center following a simulated earthquake, and were exposed to the noise and activity involved in a simulated apartment fire. Such exposure makes the dogs better able to do their job in an actual emergency. Council will be notified when the broadcast date for the Today Show segment is announced. For more information, please contact Deputy Fire Marshal Amy Linder at 682-8428. 2008 Road Repair Projects Scheduled to Begin This Month More than 46 lane miles of streets in Eugene are scheduled for overlay or slurry seal types of repairs this summer, with work slated to start on some streets as soon as next week. Total estimated cost of 2008 pavement preservation work is $5.5 million. More than 23 lane miles of overlay paving is scheduled to begin May 11 and continue through the summer. Streets being overlaid thth include East 13 Avenue (Franklin Boulevard to Agate Street), 27 Avenue (Amazon Parkway to Jefferson Street), Barger Drive (Highway 99 to Altimont Street, and also Primrose Street to Terry Street), Chad Drive (Coburg Road to the east end of Chad), Chambers Street (Railroad Boulevard to Eighth Avenue), and Roosevelt Boulevard (Chambers Street to Beltline). Eugene Sand & Gravel has been awarded the bid for the East th 13 Avenue work, and Wildish Construction has been awarded the bid for all the other projects except Roosevelt Boulevard, which has not yet been awarded. EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 2 May 8, 2008 In addition to the asphalt overlays, Public Works has two small concrete repair projects funded by pavement preservation dollars. The first is a roller-compacted concrete pilot project on Mill Alley between ththth 12 and 13 Avenues, and the other is conventional concrete repairs at Villard Street and 15Avenue. Combined these projects have a pavement preservation budget of about $140,000. Also this summer, more than 23 miles of local streets will receive a surface preservation treatment called slurry sealing. That work is scheduled to begin in July and be completed by late August. Streets in four areas are scheduled for these repairs: ththth Area 1: Almaden Street (Seventh to 11 Avenues), Arthur Street (11 to 13 Avenues), Fillmore th Street (Seventh to Eighth Avenues), Grant Street (Seventh to 15 Avenues), Hayes Street (Broadway to ththth 15 Avenue), Taylor Street (Seventh to 10 Avenues), 10 Avenue (Chambers to Garfield Streets), ththth 12 Avenue (Chambers to Arthur Streets), 14 Avenue (Chambers to Hayes Streets), and 15 Avenue (Chambers to Hayes Streets). Area 2: Bethesda Street, Elizabeth Street, Fergus Avenue, Hawthorne Avenue, Hilton Drive, Knoop Lane, Marcum Lane, Nebraska Street, and Wood Avenue. Area 3: Aldabra Street, Alphonse Avenue, Amirante Street, Astove Avenue, Burnett Avenue, Cody Avenue, Coetivy Avenue, Dakota Avenue, Lemuria Street, Minnesota Street, Ohio Street, Praslin Street, and Wisconsin Street. Area 4: Creekside Way and Sterlingwoods Drive. th Pavement overlay work on Mill/Broadway/Franklin between 11 and Sixth Avenues will also take place this summer as part of the completion of the courthouse district transportation improvement project. That work was bid last year for approximately $550,000 and was included in the totals for 2007. Funding for the Pavement Preservation Program work comes primarily from the Eugene 5-cent-per-gallon local fuel tax. Additional revenue is coming from a portion of the transportation system development charges paid by new development and from federal Surface Transportation Program (Urban) funds. Outreach has already begun to neighbors on streets scheduled for repairs. Detailed construction schedules and traffic advisories will be provided on the City’s traffic web site (www.eugene-or.gov/traffic) and on the City’s traffic hotline, 984-8484, as well as through project signage and media advisories. For more information about this year’s Pavement Preservation Program projects, contact Matt Rodrigues, PPP project manager, at 541-682-6036 The Archaeology Channel Film Festival Events The Archaeological Legacy Institute presents The Archaeology Channel International Film and Video Festival May 20 – 24, with films about archaeology, indigenous cultures and the timeless world of human culture shown at the Hult Center and at the Eugene Public Library (EPL). The only festival of its type in the Western Hemisphere, The Archaeology Channel (TAC) International Film and Video Festival is a juried international competition in the heritage film genre. Filmmakers from 17 countries submitted 81 entries to this year's festival. Eighteen of the films will be shown at the Soreng Theater May 20 – 24. EPL renews its partnership with the Festival by hosting free showings of all 81 films entered in the competition at individual stations in the Library's drop-in Video Bar, May 21 – 23. The Library will also host a free, public Symposium on Heritage Film moderated by Dr. Richard Pettigrew. Also at the Library on Friday, 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Native American Storytellingfeatures Esther Stutzman's tales of her people, the Coos and Kommema Kalapuya.
