The 46-acre natural area park is located in Eugene’s Bethel neighborhood, at the intersection of Golden Gardens Street and Jessen Drive, north of Barger Drive. The students from Prairie Mountain were classmates of Nick Davis, one of the two young boys who drowned in the park last June. Jenny Sink, a teacher at Prairie Mountain School says, “Our kids loved Nick and by doing this they are Home remembering their friend and helping make the park safer.” Team Depot is a volunteer force that brings together skilled associates of Home Depot to help those in need in the community through hands- on service. In support of this Bethel community project, all the necessary materials for this project were generously donated by Wildish, Rexius, and Home Depot. This is just the beginning of a larger effort to increase the number of people using Golden Gardens Park , for safe recreational activities. Next week Bethel citizens and neighbors are invited to a public workshop to discuss park improvements. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, June 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Shasta Middle School’s Studio West, located at 4656 Barger Avenue. This is the first in a series of public workshops to be held throughout the summer. EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1 June 8, 2006 U.S. Secretary of the Interior Names Ridgeline a National Recreational Trail On June 1, Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne designated Eugene's Ridgeline Trail a National Recreational Trail. This year, 36 trails in 24 states received the designation, joining a network of over 900 trails encompassing more than 10,000 miles of trail. Each of the trails inducted into the National Recreation Trails System receives a certificate of designation and trail markers. Additionally, designated trails receive preferential consideration when being ranked for receipt of federal Recreational Trails Program grant funds. Election 2006 Update No appeals to the ballot titles prepared by the City Attorney for the Library Local Option Levy and the Parks and Open Space General Obligation Bonds were filed during the appeal period. The measures will be certified to the ballot next week with the following captions: BONDS FOR PARKS, ATHLETIC FIELDS AND PRESERVATION OF OPEN SPACE, and FOUR-YEAR LOCAL OPTION PROPERTY TAX LEVY FOR LIBRARY OPERATIONS. Measure numbers will be assigned following certification. The full titles including the captions, questions and summaries are available in the City Recorder’s Office and on the website under “City Highlights” at http://www.eugene-or.gov/portal/server.pt. The City has received certified results of the May 16 Primary Election. City Council candidates advancing to the November General Election ballot are Alan Zelenka, Ward 3; George Poling, Ward 4; Mike Clark, Ward 5; and Jennifer Solomon, Ward 6. Friends of the Library Magazine Sale It's time for the Friends of Eugene Public Library's Magazine Sale - a favorite event for many local readers—and collage artists! On Sunday, June 11, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Downtown Library, choose from thousands of gently-read, recent issues of popular magazines. You'll find magazines on all topics and for all ages—most for just 25¢ each. The selection includes magazines on cooking, gardening, travel, nature, news, science, home decor, finance, fashion, crafts, and many more. Vintage magazines are individually priced. The Magazine Sale is staffed entirely by volunteers, with all proceeds going to support Eugene Public Library programs and materials. All City-owned parking is free on Sundays. The Friends of Eugene Public Library is a non-profit membership organization that raises more than $75,000 annually to support Eugene Public Library projects. The Friends have funded children's programs, including Summer Reading; speakers and special events; the purchase of movies, audiobooks, and music CDs; and the start-up of the Bethel and Sheldon Branches and the new Downtown Library. Donations of gently-used, recent magazines (and books) may be dropped off at any Library location: the Downtown Library, in the lower level parking garage; the Rite-Aid next to the Sheldon Branch Library; or the Bethel Branch Library. Two Pavement Preservation Projects Set to Start June 19 Two projects that will significantly preserve the existing transportation system are scheduled to begin Monday, June 19. th Wildish Construction has been awarded a $1.6 million contract to reconstruct Hilyard Street from 13 to thth 24 avenues and to overlay Patterson Street from East Broadway to 13 Avenue. The work on Hilyard EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 2 June 8, 2006 thththth will be done in two phases – first from 13 to 18 avenues, and then from 18 to 24 avenues. In both t will be excavated to the roadtilities phases, the streebed, any necessary repairs to underground u will be made, the road bed will be reconstructed, and a new street surface will be constructed. Public Works Engineering designed and is managing the project, which is funded primarily through local motor fuel tax revenues and transportation system development charges. Wildish also has been awarded a $388,300 contract to reconstruct and resurface Fern Ridge Path from the City View to Garfield Street and from Chambers Street to Blue Heron Bike Bridge. The work involves removing the existing asphalt path and constructing a new, 10-foot-wide concrete path surface. The project was designed by Public Works Engineering, and the Oregon Department of Transportation is managing the contract. Funding comes primarily from the federal Surface Transportation Program s (STP) and local transportation system development charges. Both projects will cause some short-term inconvenience for transportation system users. Portions of Hilyard Street will be closed over the summer, and motorists will be directed to use alternate routes. , Engineering staff is working closely with PeaceHealth, local businesses and residents to ensure critical access is maintained and that inconveniences are minimized as much as possible. Sidewalks will remain open for pedestrians, and the City is using a regional partnership, www.keepusmoving.info, as one way to let the public know about project detours. The Fern Ridge Path will be closed for several weeks while the new concrete surface cures. A th temporary path will be created just east of City View for cyclists to walk their bikes to 12 Avenue, which has been designated as the detour route during construction. Engineering staff is working closely with cycling groups to get the word out about the improvements to the path and the temporary detours.
