No action is required by the City Council. BACKGROUND At its 1997 fall process session, the council agreed to include a monthly agenda item entitled "Ceremonial Matters." From time to time, the Mayor is asked to sign proclamations or acknowledge awards received, which serve to encourage and educate the community about important issues and events. One item is scheduled under Ceremonial Matters: Proclamation Acknowledging Holt International ? CITY MANAGER’S RECOMMENDATION This is an information item only. ATTACHMENTS A. PROCLAMATION Whereas, Harry and Bertha Holt simply wanted to help children in desperate need and in doing so eventually adopted eight children; and Whereas, Their compassion and caring for these and other orphans led them to establish Holt International Agency in 1956; and Whereas, The mission, objectives and work of Holt International has and is driven by what is best for children and by upholding the ethics and devoted practices of Harry and Bertha Holt; and Whereas, Today, 50 years later, Holt International continues to find families for children and is the largest adoption agency in the United States, having united nearly 40,000 children with adoptive families; and Whereas, th Holt International will mark its 50 anniversary by holding a conference in Eugene, Oregon on October 18 – 21, 2006 to develop bold and courageous initiatives on behalf of the world’s homeless and vulnerable children. Now, therefore, I, Kitty Piercy, Mayor of the City of Eugene, do herebyproclaim the month of October 2006 to be Holt International Month and encourage all residents of this community to recognize the contributions of Holt International during the past fifty years and its efforts to end the global problem of homeless children. ________________________________ Kitty Piercy, Mayor th Dated this 9 day of October 2006
