ISSUE STATEMENT
This is an opportunity for Mayor Piercy and Councilor Taylor to report on their recent trip to
Eugene’s sister city of Irkutsk, Russia. The trip was from August 18 – August 30, 2006, and
included meetings with Irkutsk city officials, hospital administrators, and educators, and visits to
industrial and utility sites and the world famous Lake Baikal. A brief slide show will be presented.
BACKGROUND
Eugene has four sister cities. The first was Jinju, Korea, established in 1961; next was Kathmandu,
Nepal in 1976. In 1979, a relationship with Kakegawa was created, and Eugene’s newest sister city
is Irkutsk, Russia, established in 1989.
Each of these has a local volunteer committee which is responsible for arranging various exchanges
between Eugene and the sister city. At the present time, the City of Eugene has a contract with each
of the committees in the amount of $3,750, provided that the committee on its own raises $1,250.
