~.I Chaj.rman Edwards of the JUdiciary Commi ttee re.ported regarding the
claims of Thomas Hartfiel and Grace Robertson against the City for alleged
personal inju,ries, a recommendation that the Judiciary Committee and City Attorne
be authorized, if they deem it advisable, to settle these claims on the basis of
payment of actual medical expenses. Motion was made, seconded, and carried to
adopt the recommendation.
Chairman Reid of the Sewer Committee reported that the tree -at 1403
Villard Street was on private property and was not a menace to travel upon the
street, and that there was no danger of the roots affecting the sewer. Vfuile
expressing the opinion that the owners should perhaps cut out the top, as~he .,
tree is very tall, no further recommendation was offered.
Mr. Reid also ~alled attention to the dilapidated condition of a house
on Adams Street, damaged in a recent fire and explosion, with the thought that
it should possibly be condemned, and thi s subject was referred to the Fire and
Wa tel' Commi t tee and the Gi ty Attorney.
The Recorder reported that the Library Board had responded to the
Council's request for a cut in expenses of their department with the advise that
the Library Board would be able to opera te through the remainder of this year
wi thou t furthl~r demand upon the City funds, with the understanding that proper
provision would be made for a full years bUdget for the year 1933.
I A communication from O. Laurgaard, extending an invitation to the Mayo r
I to attend the convention in Detroit next Jarmary and also urging the City to sub-
scribe to a membership in the association, was,read, and motion was made, second-
I ed, and carried that the Recorder forward the $3.00 membership fee for the en-
rollment of City Engineer, W. C. Clubb, as a member of this o!'ganiza tion.

I A ~ommuni~ation from Dorrin Dudeck of Crowe Stage Route and a clipping I
from the Monitor, Aurora, Missouri, was presented to the Council, but no action
taken.
I A remonstrance against the passage of proposed ordinance against the

:1 keeping of bees in the City of Eugene was read.

An Ordinance prohibiting the keeping of bees within the City of Eugene,
substituted as a new ordinance in the place of the ordinance suggested at a f'orme
meeting, passed its first and second readings, and Councilmen Hendershott and
I Jones objected to its final passage at this meeting, and it was laid over.
The Judiciary Committee and Finance Committee recommended to the Counci

I. that the following bills be allowed, and that a warrant be drawn to L. S. McCread'
for the total of the bills, amounting to $2,044.99, the said bills being as folIo

Motion was made and seconded t.hat said claims be paid and warrants be drawn as
stated. The ayes and nays were called, all Councilmen voting aye, nay, none,
I absent Zumwal t.

A plan was proposed for the openil~ and improving of an alley running
North and South, West of the City Jail and Eugene Hospital, which contemplated
the securing of right-of-ways for alley purposes from the Eugene Hospital, Knights
I of Pythias, and Lake Marble Works, with the thought tha t if the owners would
give the right-of-ways, the City should pay the cost of paving this alley, and
the matter was referred to the Street Committee.
Recorder R. S. Bryson gave public notice that petitions for offices I
to be filled in the coming election for the C1 ty of Eugene would be recei ved until
12 0' clock Noon, Wednesda y, September 28 th, and that no pe ti t ions would be re-
cei ved after that time. Motion was made, seconded, and carried.
