Council w~s called to order by Mayor Elisha (X Large, wi th all Councilmen present except Mr. Scobert and Mr. Hendershott. Mr. Gabriel and Mr. Cashman of. the Pacific Savings & Loan Association, addressed the Council regarding the City accepting Bonds in payment of liens on property on whil3h they have l:oans. After somedisu6sion the mat.ter was referred to the Finance and Judiciary Committees, and the City Attorney. A letter f,rom Dick Strite, Program Director of the Young Men's Christian Association, protesting against the City's swimming activities back of the Butte, was read. Mr. Dan T. Baily, of the Anchorage, also spoke against the City carrying on the swimming actvities this summer. (At this time Councilman Hendershott appear, ed in Council). There was some discussion, but no action taken in the matter by -- the Council. 1t I The Finance Committee reported the 'purchase of $5,000.00 General Obligation Sewer Bonds from Conrad, Bruce' & Co., due in 1942 at 5 per cent interest at $88.25, to yield about $6.75. On motion the purchase was confirmed by the Council. The ayes and nays were called, Councilmen voting aye, 7, nay, none, absent Scobert. Mr. Bond, of the Fire and Water Committee, spoke in regard to a light request- ed at the North end of Adams Street. ' He said there were only about three houses up there, and that the cost of running a line wOlld be about $75.00. It seemed out of proportion with the service to be rendered. He also reported that there has I been 35 light globes and fixtures broken by stones and B.B. guns in the last three months.' I Mr. Zumwalt reported the complaint regarding chickens housed in an old barn at, 343 East 8th Avenue, and the Chief of Poli ce was instruc ted to look into the , conditions at that place. I I Mr. Calkins reported that the Committee wanted anot.her two weeks time bef:ore I; reporting on the Electrical Ordinance. The Council directed that the Recorder notify 1~. Jeans that if the Walnut tree in the alley between Fifth and Sixth and Oak and Pearl Streets was not remove- ed by June 30th that the Street Department would cut it down July 1st. ' I Mr. Lamb reported regarding a sidewalk on West 8'th Avenue in front of' the 11 Florence Stevens place, and after some discussion the Council instructed the Ci ty Attorney to draw up.a reassessment Ordinance for this sidewalk. r Mr. O. H. Bray presented a request that his Package license, 1';1' beer be ' I exchanged for a Retailer's license, he to pay the difference of $15.00 between the I price of the two licenses, and on motion dl.he Counciib directed that this be done. 1 The Bond of the National Surety Corporation assuming liability of the National I Surety Company Bond for H. S. Elliott, was accepted by the Council. I The Police Committee recommended that the applications of Ted Harris for a ~ General Retailer's Beer License, and Guy Oldham for General Retailer1s Beer License I be granted. The motion was made, seconded, and carried that the recommendation be j adopted. ! 1 At this time Mr. Hendershott asked the Council if they had any further suggest I ions regarding the swimming activities of the play ground for this season, and if not that the work would be started July 1 as planned. No one had any objections to make to this program. I[ An Ordinance levying asse ssment s for the paving of Washington Street from 13th I Avenue West to 19th Avenue West in the City of Eugene, Lane County, Oregon, was read the first time and passed its second and third readings under suspension of the rule by unanimous consent of the Council, and was placed upon its final passage The ayes and nays were called, Councilmen voting aye 7, nay none, absent Seabert. The Ordinance was declared passed and numbered 8335. An Ordinan.ce levying assessments for constructing a sewer between Lawrence 1 Street and Washington Streett-rom 15th Avenue West to 19th Avenue West, in the Ci ty " of Eugene, Lane 'County, Oregon, was read the first time and passed its second and I third readings under suspension Of the rule by unanimous consent of the Council, j and was placed upon its final passage. The ayes and nays were called" Councilmen voting aye 7, nay, none, absent Scobert. The Ordinance was declared passed and numbered 8337. An Ordinance declaring the intention of the Common Council of the City of Eugene to make a reassessment of the cost of opening 17th Avenue f.rom Lawrence St.reet to the East line of Hollenbeck's Addition in the City of Eugene, as_the same benefits the properties hereinafter described, and fixing a time and place for holding a meeting of the Common Counc i1 at which allprot'ests against su.ch reassess- ment shall be heard, and directing the giving of notices, ,was .read the first time .- and passed its second and third readings under suspension of the .rule by unanimous ,c onsent of the Counc il, and was placed upon its final passage. The aye s and nays were called, Councilmen voting aye 7, nay none, absent Scobert. The Ordinance was declared passed and nu.mbered 8338. The following .re~olution was read: RES 0 L UT ION WHEREAS, nego~iations are pending for re-.rental of a .room containing approximately 289 square feet of floor space on the second floor of the City Hall Building, situated on the West side of Willamette Street between Eleventh and ~welfth Streets in Eugene, Oregon, to the Vnited States of America for the period beginning July 1, 1933 and ending July 31, 1933, and thereafte.r from month to I month until 'June 30, 1934, subj~ct to the .right of either party, to terminate the, leas~ on one calendar month's notice; at a rental rate of $120.00 per annum. Payable at the end of each calenda.r Month. - NOW; THEREFORE, be it resolved that the City of Eugene approve said lease in accordance with all the terms thereof, and that the Mayor and Recorder be and are hereby authorized to execute said lease on behalf of said City of Eugene.
