I - ~ A report of the Polic,e Committee was submitted and read as follows: I "Your Committee on Police' to whom was referred various matters begs - 4: to report as follows: In the ma tter of Ordinance No. 8931 covering licensing of i pinball games as passed by the Common Council August 12, 1946, we are recommending I that this ordinance be amended to provide for the payment of a license fee of $24.00 per year per machine. Our ilNestigation on the operation of pinball games reveals that communities charging $200.00 or more per year for a license, allow for the payment in cash or checks to the players. Operation of these machines on any other basis would make payment of the originally proposed license fee im- : possible. We further recommend that the above ordinance, be so amended as to pro- i vide for the licensing of music machines at the rate of $24.00 per yea-I' per I machine. Licenses on both pinball games and music machines to be pro-rated on a , six months basis only. I In the matter of parking installations the committee recommends that ! meters be placed on Willamette Street from 11th to 13th Avenues and on West I Broadway between Olive and Charnelton when such meters are available." , , 0 . A report from the office of the City Manager re: various department activities, was submitted and read. 5i "A report on the current activities of the several city departments is i submitted for your information as follows: , I ! The long-deferred maint enanc e work on oiled streets in various sections i of the city has been recently completed with approximately twelve miles of streets I and roads treat'ed. Our maintenance .crews are following up these improvement,s I with a program of restoring and impr,oving drainage facilities along these streets I to provide maximwn protection agains,t water damage to the oil surfacing. I ; Asphalt resurfacing of various streets and alleys, recently contracted i to the J. C. Compton company, is slated to start within a week to ten days. When -- I completed, this program, combined with the oil work, will represent a total in- ; vestment of approximately $52,000 in' street repairs for the season, exclusive of oui routine maintenance costs. . Our police I' ep ortfor August again shows a trend in improvement of i' our traffic situation wi th the caualty total lower than for the same period II' of 1945 as compared to startling increases in the number of traffic deaths ,'j and, injuries for the state and nation. A comparison of crime statistics t generally shows even more gratifying results. ':1 Iii The Euge ne Fire Department is now accepting applic ations for addi tional ~ volunteers with the completion of its third floor dormitory in the city hall. it With additional sleepers' it is hoped to have a minimum of twenty men on night 'I',:, duty this winter, plus regular off-shift men and ten volunteers, giving us a i potential of fqrty trained fire-fighters. I ~ Training progfams in both police 'and fire departments are continuing ',1 and'we are pleased to report that one of our officers in the police department, II,' Mr.. Leonard l~elson, has been selected as the new Chief of Police for Coos Bay, ; assuming his new duties there as of Sunday. I' The summer's recreation program was completed September 1, wi th the' I'"l clo~ing of the Anchorage pool for the seaso'n. Attendance at playgrounds and J special events totalled more than 35,000, including 12,000 admissions at the i: poo~. Twenty-one persons were employed in the program at 'a total net cost r for the entire program to the city of $3,500. I, I : Activities at the Municipal Airport and Eugene Airpark for August : t show an increase in both commercial and private flying.
