New Intergovernmental Relations Manager Hired
Brenda Wilson has been hired as the new Intergovernmental Relations
Manager for the City of Eugene. She began her new duties on
December 15.
Brenda was formerly employed by the Public Employees Retirement
System (PERS), as the head of the Policy, Planning and Legislative
Analysis Division. She has a master’s degree and law degree from
Southern Illinois University. Prior to working for PERS, Brenda worked
for a law firm in Baltimore and for the Oregon Water Resources
Department. In 1999, she worked for the City of Eugene as a
Legislative Analyst during the Oregon Legislative Session.
Brenda’s immediate task is to prepare for the upcoming 2007 Legislative Session which will begin in
Salem on January 8. Also included in her portfolio will be serving as lead staff for the City of Eugene’s
participation in the local lobbying consortium known as the “United Front,” staffing the City Council’s IGR
Committee, and working with the City’s local governmental partners.

Fire Prevention Advertising Project Planned
Fire Marshal’s Office staff met with representatives from SELCO Credit Union last week to expand on a
joint partnership for fire prevention advertising at the Cinema World 8 Valley River Theater. SELCO’s
participation means that the 15-second voiceover animated advertisement, which is slated to begin
screening in February 2007, will become a 30-second safety commercial. In addition, SELCO's Vice
President of Marketing will discuss production opportunities with KEZI, which is already familiar with
Eugene Fire & EMS’ fire prevention advertising from a previous series of Public Service Advertisements.
On a similar note, SELCO's Director of Community Involvement has agreed to underwrite the costs of
Eugene Fire & EMS’ efforts on fire prevention presentations to second grade classes during the 2007
Fire Prevention Week. Eugene Fire & EMS is grateful to SELCO for its interest and participation in

New Year's Opportunities for Teens @ Eugene Public Library!
Teens are invited to apply for the next eight-week session of Teen
Team at the Eugene Public Library. Teen Team helps Downtown
Library staff get items ready for check-out, keep books in order,
prepare craft projects for kids’ programs, clean books, create
displays, and more. This service learning project is a great way to
support the Library, meet new friends, and contribute ideas and
opinions. Plus, participating teens earn community service credit for
school. Teen Team meets Tuesdays, 4 – 5 p.m., starting January
16.
Make Your Own Movies is an extraordinary chance for teens to get
hands-on training with video professionals at the Downtown Eugene Public Library. Participants learn to
plan, storyboard, script, shoot, and edit with Apple iMovie. Metro TV teaches a six-week workshop for
teens, including group and individual sessions, starting January 16. Cameras and computers provided
for class use. Make Your Own Movies is free-of-charge, but space is limited, so apply now! For

Fire Crew Sparks Interest in Reading
The City’s on-duty fire suppression crews make themselves available (subject to emergency departure)
to participate in many different types of community events and gatherings, whenever they can share fire
safety information or otherwise help further the department’s and the City’s goals. Last week, Engine 1
went to the Eugene Public Library to visit two sessions of the Library’s Preschool Storytimes Program.
The firefighters explained how they use some of their equipment, provided fire safety tips, and told the
audiences (ages 3 to 6) how and when to use 9-1-1. Youth Librarian Michele Green reported later that,
soon after these presentations, all the fire-related books she had on display were checked out. For more
