ISSUE STATEMENT
This is an action item to appoint a member to the Police Commission.
BACKGROUND
When needed, interim appointments to boards and committees are made outside of the regular annual
recruitment process. Recently, a member of the Police Commission was unable to continue in his role on
the Police Commission, thus there is a need to appoint a person to complete his term.
Members of the Police Commission are appointed by the City Council after being nominated by the
Mayor. The applicant now being nominated by the Mayor is one of the applicants not selected in the Fall
2006 recruitment process.
RELATED CITY POLICIES
The boards, committees and commissions serve as advisory bodies to the City and to the development of
various city policies.
COUNCIL OPTIONS
The City Council may:
1. Appoint applicant who has been nominated;
2. Reject the nominee and ask the Mayor to offer another applicant.
CITY MANAGER’S RECOMMENDATION
The City Manager has no recommendation on this item; the appointments are made by the City Council.
SUGGESTED MOTIONS
Move to appoint John Hare to Position 1 on the Police Commission, to complete the unexpired term of
George Bennett, for an interim term beginning on January 23, 2007, and ending on October 31, 2007.
