These lifeguards hold a wide range of certifications for emergency response: American Red Cross Lifesaving, First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. They are also trained to use automated external defibrillators for head attacks, administer oxygen, manage airways through the use of airway adjuncts, and deal with blood-borne pathogens. Their skills and knowledge are regularly tested and verified during in-service trainings to make sure they're ready to provide top-notch care in any emergency situation. In addition to water rescue drills, a special twist was added to this recent in-service to create some unique response challenges. The organizers created a mass casualty scenario: an earthquake. In-services, by design, not only keep current skills sharp, but provide a realistic training ground where new skills can be developed and improved. The aquatics team did a great job of handling this unusual emergency situation. Whether in the water or on dry land, your City of Eugene lifeguards are ready to respond! Tickets sold out fast for this remarkable New York dance company's only Oregon appearance for the 2003-2004 season. African-American dancer Arthur Mitchell founded the company as his personal commitment to the youth of Harlem following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. In addition to the February 4 performance in Silva Concert Hall, four workshops were offered: an advanced ballet Master Class at the U of O; a jazz Master Class led by one of the company's principal dancers in Studio 1; a discussion led by the dancers about the company's history called "Dancing Through Barriers" at the Downtown Library; and a pre-show discussion at the Hult Center during which the dancers offered an inside view of the performance. White Oak, Big Leaf Maple Trees Visible Aqain on West Slope of Skinner Butte On Saturday, February 7, parks staff and volunteers from the Eugene Tree Foundation liberated the canopies of a stand of native Oregon white oak and big leaf maple trees on the west slope of Skinner Butte, just above the climbing columns and 300 feet from the base of the road near the columns. This was accomplished by closing a portion of Skinner Butte Loop, bringing in a chipper truck, tractor, cable/pulley system, and other heavy equipment, and removing the Douglas firs and invasive cherry trees that had significantly encroached on this stand of trees. Douglas fir trunks were salvaged and will be stored for future trail or railing projects on the butte. "This was some tough work, done in tough conditions, but, with tree experts Mark Watson, Steve Hespen and Dave Edwards and several Eugene Tree Foundation volunteers, our joint efforts contributed to the successful completion of yet another phase of the restoration project at Skinner Butte Park," says Troy Kreger, Volunteers in Parks coordinator. Saturday's work at Skinner Butte Park was made possible by Eugene Downtown Rotary volunteers, who cleared undergrowth at a work party at the end of last year. The effort of restoring native upland prairie habitat at the park is guided by the 2002 Skinner Butte Park comprehensive plan. The park's plan calls for the restoration and long-term preservation of native upland prairie habitat that once covered nearly all of Skinner Butte. Elections Update On February 6, Kevin Gore became the eighth candidate to file a prospective petition for Mayor. A day earlier, Maurie Denner filed his prospective petition for the City Council Ward 2 position. Scott Meisner turned in his petitions and completed the filing process for City Council Ward 7 on February 9. The City Recorder's Office has received fewer calls this week from people requesting information about becoming a candidate, but inquiries about the names of candidates and where they are in the filing process have increased.
