EUGENE ROTARIANS TO HELP BUILD REGIONAL PLAYGROUND AT SKINNER BUTTE PARK TRICK PONY AT THE CUTHBERT AMPHITHEATER ON SEPTEMBER 1 AROUND THE CITY Next Meetings Set for River Avenue Stakeholders The 10-member River Avenue stakeholders group held its first meeting on Wednesday, August 24. After receiving information from staff and from a representative from the Oregon Department of Transportation, the group agreed to hold two additional meetings to consider various design options. The second meeting will be held Tuesday, August 30, at 7 p.m. at the Wastewater Treatment Plant, 410 River Avenue. The third meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 5, also at 7 p.m. at the treatment plant. Staff has tentatively scheduled a work session with Council on October 24. Event Parking Area Improvements Soon Under Way at Alton Baker Park Improvements to the event parking area at Alton Baker Park will be under way in the next two weeks. The goal of the project is to regrade the existing rough parking areas to better serve park patrons during larger events at the park. The work will involve smoothing the existing rough land that includes the areas that were previously the site of a dog park and a community garden. These areas were identified in the West Alton Baker Plan for a future expansion of the main parking lot and for overflow event parking. The project area is located south of Day Island Road, east of the shelters and north of the boat ramp parking area. The regraded area will be seeded with a mix of grasses and native flowers, much of which will be mowed seasonally to provide a firm and even surface for parking. In the unmown areas, the grasses and native flowers will provide visual interest as well as cover and food for wildlife. The site improvement work is being undertaken this fall in order to take advantage of the ideal dry soil conditions and the upcoming fall grass establishment period. This September, as a finale to Eugene Public Library’s (EPL) year-long 100 Year Celebration, EPL joins libraries nationwide to call attention to the value of a library card. Come tell the world why you love your library and add your thoughts to the Something for Everyone @ Your Library displays at the Downtown Library and Bethel and Sheldon branches. Your favorite thing about EPL may be the type of material you most enjoy browsing or borrowing, a particular service or event the Library offers, or a comfortable place you like to sit and read. Or perhaps it’s a principle that the Eugene Public Library stands for, such as access for all, lifelong learning, or freedom of expression. Eugene Rotarians to Help Build Regional Playground at Skinner Butte Park More than 60 Rotarians will roll up their sleeves this Saturday, August 27, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help assemble and install the Skinner Butte climber play structure in the RiverPlay Discovery Village playground in Skinner Butte Park. Construction began on the first phase of RiverPlay earlier this summer, and work is progressing rapidly. The large play structure, a fanciful replica of Skinner Butte standing 25 feet high and covering about 1,000 square feet, forms the cornerstone of the one-acre playground. The tri-level structure will be wheelchair accessible via an elevated pedestrian bridge and is packed with a variety of play features. The Eugene Rotary Club has pledged its support for RiverPlay as its Centennial Project, celebrating 100 years of Rotary Club service to the community. The project aims to involve members in fundraising and hands-on efforts that will benefit the community for generations. The Rotary Club helped secure nearly $400,000 in grants and community contributions so far. This Saturday’s work party is the second in a series of three major, on-site volunteer projects. The third work party is scheduled for late October. Completion of phase one of the RiverPlay Discovery Village playground is currently scheduled for late November. In addition to the “butte climber,” other first phase play elements include a millrace water wheel, a “rain circle” plaza, a replica of the climbing columns, a pioneer village, a ferry, a stagecoach spring rider, and swings. Fundraising for phase two continues for the remaining Discovery Village play features, including a Kalapuya village, an old mill play structure, ancient history sand-dig, and the “little Willamette.” The playground site is located across from 210 Cheshire on the north side of Skinner Butte. Trick Pony at the Cuthbert Amphitheater on September 1 On Thursday, September 1, the Shedd Institute presents Trick Pony at the Cuthbert Amphitheater. This energetic honky-tonk band delivers non-stop entertainment. Ira Dean, Keith Burns, and Heidi Newfield mix their sound with lyrics that reflect past challenges and audiences can expect to hear hits and tracks from “R.I.D.E.” The musicians' journey began in 1996 and, sparked by three hit singles, their first album exploded to fame in 2001. Now with “R.I.D.E.” and two albums to be released this month, Trick Pony has earned awards from both the Academy of Country Music and the American Music Awards.Their roots, the source of energy throughout “R.I.D.E.”, will keep them moving wherever they go.
