Kids Learn Fire Safety From Cody
The Cody program offered by the Fire & EMS Department is now in full operation, with Cody, Official Fire Safety
Dalmatian, scheduled to visit a local first-grade classroom every Wednesday through the end of this year. Last
week, Cody was at Gilham Elementary School, along with his
owner, Deputy Fire Marshal Amy Linder, to show students
some basic -- but lifesaving -- fire safety skills. With
interactive demonstrations, written materials, a quiz, and
prizes, Cody and Amy teach children to stop-drop-and-roll,
crawl low through smoke, know whether a smoke alarm is
working, know what to do when it goes off, call 9-1-1, and go
to a designated meeting place. The Cody program is part of
the Fire Prevention section's public education mandate, and is
made possible in part through a grant from Fireman's Fund
Insurance. The program will continue next year, as more and
more first-grade classes are already asking for a visit from

K-12 Oregon Green School Incentive Grants Offered
The City of Eugene Waste Prevention Program is streamlining its annual grant program to encourage more
schools to become Oregon Green Schools. Together with Lane County Waste Management, this grant will provide
a total of $5,000 toward incentives for school recycling and waste
prevention efforts. The K-12 Green School Incentive Grant
program assists schools with the purchase of equipment and
services that will lead to success in reducing waste and creating
more sustainable schools. Last year, 10 schools throughout Lane
County used the grants to fund projects such as providing durable
lunch kits for students and families, starting or improving cafeteria
composting systems, switching from disposable to durable lunch
ware, and conducting education campaigns and programs
designed to increase student participation in recycling. The
Oregon Green School Association is a nonprofit, statewide
program whose mission is “Helping Oregon Schools set up and
maintain effective, permanent waste reduction and resource
efficiency programs that improve school environments and
communities.” Currently, there are 200 member schools, of which 14 are located in Lane County. Green Schools

receive technical assistance and guidance for waste prevention and recycling programs, certification decals,
plaques and public recognition, and free attendance at the statewide Oregon Green School Summit for students

Eugene Airport Director Named Airport Executive of the Year
Eugene Airport Director Tim Doll received the 2008 Airport Executive of the Year award from the Northwest
Chapter of American Association of Airport Executives (NWAAAE). The goal of the award is to commend an
airport executive who has demonstrated superior performance in the following areas:
Providing public service to the community in the form of an efficient air transportation facility
?
Public relations accomplishments in the areas of “Good Neighbor Relations”
?
Environmental achievements in the areas of aesthetics, noise or pollution reduction or control
?
Efficient handling of the administrative complexities of state and federal grant programs
?
Management functions and good labor relations with employees and tenants
?
Personal integrity and professional reputation, both in the public community and among peers in the airport
?
management field
Doll took on the Airport Director position in Eugene in April 2007. He has more than 15 years of experience in
airport management and is an Accredited Airport Executive in the AAAE organization. Doll, who had been serving
as the West Board Member for NWAAAE, has been elected as Secretary/Treasurer. This position is in the rotation
for succession to chapter president. NWAAAE includes the states of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho,
Montana, Utah, Wyoming and Colorado and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan,

Upcoming “Energy Fare” Offers Menu of Savings
Worried about rising energy costs? Saving energy at home is an effective way of keeping money in your pocket
while having a positive impact on the environment. Homeowners and renters are invited to learn about proven,
practical strategies to take control of energy costs at the “Energy Fare: A Menu of Savings” on Wednesday,
October 29, at the Eugene Public Library, Bascom-Tykeson Room. Free and low-cost options will be emphasized
at the event. An open house beginning at 3:30 p.m.will provide attendeeswith an opportunity to speak with
energy experts and representatives from other community resources.The main event at 5:30 p.m. will include
door prizes and raffle drawings. No registration is required and drop-ins are welcome. The event is sponsored by

Photo Exhibit Inspires Choreographic Masterpiece
With a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Hult Presents, the presentation arm of the City’s Cultural
Services Division, has launched a major project centering on Ronald K. Brown’s contemporary dance company,
EVIDENCE. The company will perform in Silva Concert Hall on Sunday, October 26 at 2:30 p.m. Besides Hult
Presents, the multi-faceted project involves other community partners,
including DIVA (Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts), University of Oregon,
Lane Community College and Recreation Services Division. A major focus is
the photo exhibit entitled Charles “Teenie” Harris: Rhapsody in Black and
White. The free exhibit features 31 historic photos taken by Charles Harris
from 1936 to 1975 that capture urban African American life during a time of
significant change. The exhibit will be shown October 14 to November 22 at
DIVA, located at Broadway and Olive streets. Professor Deborah Willis, one of
the nation’s leading historians of African American photography is the exhibit
co-curator (with Ronald K. Brown) and will provide a free public lecture about
the work of Charles Harris on Friday, October 17, at 5:30 p.m. at DIVA. The
photographs will appear again in the public dance performance on October 26,
as Ronald K. Brown and his EVIDENCE dance company incorporate them into Brown’s choreography on stage in a
fascinating and unusual performance. Brown’s dance company will offer master classes in contemporary dance at
the U of O, and a class in dance and music that is open to the public on Friday, October 24 at 3:00 p.m. in the
Gerlinger Annex at the U of O. Brown will also teach a photography workshop for middle school students that will
be coordinated by Recreation Services. The students will be prepared by instructor Julie Rudolph to capture their
lives in a photograph as Harris did, and then interpret those photos with Ronald K. Brown. The entire project
culminates in the October 26 performance at the Hult Center, by Ronald K. Brown’s EVIDENCE. For more

Windfall Reading Series Features Poets
The Windfall Reading Series features soulful, skillful poetry by Tom Crawford and Candice
Favilla at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, at the Downtown Eugene Public Library. Meet
and hear the writers in person, with refreshments at intermission; authors’ works available for
purchase and signing. Influenced by years teaching in China and Korea and an interest in
Eastern philosophy, Tom Crawford writes poems that make everyday experiences
transcendent. Simultaneously, his working-class pragmatism offers a
humorous acceptance of life’s surprises and disappointments. Crawford has
been honored with the Pushcart Prize and the Oregon Book Award for
Poetry. He lives in Santa Fe, and his latest collection is titled "wu wei." Candice Favilla grew up
on a California almond farm, the first of her family to finish high school. Her work expresses both
outrage and intellect, bristling with passion and concern for the working poor, the old, and a world
overtaken by the demands of “have mores.” Favilla’s collections are titled "Cups" and "Things
That Ease Despair." She lives in Bandon-by-the-Bay and teaches at Southwestern Oregon
Community College. The Windfall Reading Series is sponsored by the Eugene Public Library, Lane Literary Guild,
Friends of the Library, Eugene Public Library Foundation, and the Cultural Services Division of Lane Arts Council.

Publications Offer Information on Ballot Measures and Candidates
Eugene voters this week received several pieces of information related to the November election ballot.
An informational tabloid about two City of Eugene measures on the November ballot went to the post office last
week. The tabloid contains information about Measure 20-145, bonds to fix streets, and Measure 20-146, a charter
amendment on external review of complaints involving police employees. A total of 71,000 copies of the tabloid
were printed. Total cost of printing and distribution were approximately $17,000, well under the $25,000 budget
approved by the City Council. Meanwhile, the City Recorder’s Office has mailed copies of the Eugene Voters’
Pamphlet to all households in Eugene. That publication includes information about the two ballot measures,
including arguments in support (no arguments in opposition were filed for either measure), School District 4J
Measure 20-137 (renew five-year local option levy for general operations), and candidates for Eugene Mayor, the
City Council, and the Eugene Water and Electric Board. In addition to mailing the publications to all city
households, copies have been sent to all City departments, community centers and libraries. For more information
