ISSUE STATEMENT
This is an opportunity for Mayor Piercy and Councilor Papé to report on their recent trip to two of
Eugene’s sister cities: Jinju, Korea and Kakegawa, Japan. They left on October 2, 2005, on trip that
included visits with the mayors of the two sister cities, as well as a number of cultural and
educational institutions in Korea and Japan. A brief slide show will be presented.
BACKGROUND
Eugene has four sister cities. The first was Jinju, Korea, established in 1961; next was Kathmandu,
Nepal in 1976. In 1979, a relationship with Kakegawa was created, and the newest sister city is
Irkutsk, Russia, established in 1989.
Each of these has a local volunteer committee which is responsible for arranging various exchanges
between Eugene and the sister city. At the present time, the City of Eugene has a contract with each
of the committees in the amount of $3,750, provided that the committee on its own raises $1,250.
