DATE SUBMITTED: October 16, 2000 PASSED: 5/0 OPPOSED: ABSENT: Nathanson, Pape, Farr REJECTED: DEFERRED TO: RESOLUTION NUMBER 4655 A RESOLUTION TO OPPOSE THE NOVEMBER 2000 GENERAL ELECTION BALLOT MEASURES 92 AND 98 BY THE EUGENE CITY COUNCIL. WHEREAS Ballot Measure 92, which is on the November 7, 2000, general election ballot, would amend the Oregon Constitution to prohibit unions from making payroll deductions without an employee's annual written authorization; and WHEREAS Ballot Measure 98, which is on the November 7, 2000, general election ballot, would amend the Oregon Constitution to prohibit governments from spending money to aid in the collection of union dues for political purposes; and WHEREAS Ballot Measures 92 and 98 would single out union members and unfairly and unnecessarily interfere with and restrict their rights of participation and privacy in the political process; and WHEREAS, Ballot Measures 92 and 98 would also interfere with and restrict work place giving programs through payroll deductions. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EUGENE, A Municipal Corporation of the State of Oregon, that the Council does hereby go on record as opposing Ballot Measures 92 and 98.
