ISSUE STATEMENT
The purpose of this workshop is to receive an update and a brief overview of the 2008 Olympic Track
and Field Trials at Hayward Field.
BACKGROUND
In October 2005, Eugene was awarded the honor of hosting the 2008 Olympic Track and Field Trials, a
10-day event (June 27 – July 6) that is expected to generate attendance of 170,000 and $18 million in
direct spending in the local community. As Eugene presents itself as the “World’s Greatest City of the
Arts and Outdoors,” this event will underscore for world audiences its relationship to recreation, sports,
and culture.
Co-chairs of the Local Organizing Committee, Greg Irwin (President, Oregon Track Club) and Vin
Lananna (Assoc. Athletic Director and Head Coach, University of Oregon Track and Field), will
highlight the successful bid for the 2008 Olympic Track & Field Trials. USA Track and Field CEO
Craig Masback will speak briefly about the bid and the upcoming event. Members of the bid
presentation team will be present as well as to answer questions.
The Local Organizing Committee has made a financial request for support from the City of Eugene,
which is being considered as part of the FY07 annual budget process.

Recreation” and the City Council Priority Issue of “Supporting the Arts and Outdoors as a Theme for
Eugene.”

All available rooms in the metro area, South Lane County and North Lane County are
expected to completely fill. CVALCO will be referring overflow first to Florence, coastal Lane
County, the McKenzie Valley and Oakridge, and then points north of Lane County like
Albany, Corvallis, and Salem.
