Summer in the City Promotes Livelier, Safer Downtown
Mayor Kitty Piercy, Arts Ambassador Fred Crafts, Chief of
Police Pete Kerns and Eugene Chamber and Downtown
Eugene, Inc. president Dave Hauser this week “kicked off” the
start of Summer in the City, announcing a fun and varied slate
of free music and entertainment to be presented throughout the
summer at the Broadway Plaza, downtown Park Blocks, Library
and other downtown locations.
Building on efforts begun last year, Summer in the City is part of
a multi-faceted, proactive approach to make downtown livelier,
safer, and more inviting. Free entertainment will be presented
several days a week, lighting will be improved in several
locations and EPD’s downtown bicycle patrol has increased its
presence to enhance safety, and inhibit behavior problems and
criminal activity.
Summer in the City entertainment includes lunchtime performances every Tuesday in the Park Blocks, Emerald
Chamber Players performances every Saturday at the Atrium, frequent evening concerts at the Broadway Plaza,
highlighted by the Satin Love Orchestra on July 30, and other entertainment several times each week. For a

and business together to make downtown Eugene a safe, welcoming and entertaining environment for all. For

City Celebrates Fifth Year of Leadership Academy
In May, the City celebrated the completion of its 2008-
2009 Leadership Academy. This is the fifth year of
concentrated leadership development and involved 29
managers representing all departments at the City.
Their participation in the nine-month program included
a personal leadership skills development assessment;
exploration of effective communication, organizational
culture and the power of stories in leadership; a study
of the skills of dynamic change, and a session with
community partners. The power of the program, along
with the monthly learning topics, has resulted in
improved cross-departmental understanding and
building of valuable cross-organizational networks
between managers and leaders at the City. This

group joins over 60 academy alumni from past programs. For more information on the City’s leadership

We Are Bethel “Moo Lawn Rouge” Kicks off Summer Events
You’ll have fun until the cows come home (or at least until 6:00 p.m.) at the We Are Bethel (WAB) Celebration that
gets underway at noon on Saturday, June 6, at Petersen Barn Community Center. The Recreation Division’s Youth
and Family Services Program organizes the annual event with community partners
including the Bethel School District and the Eugene Police Department’s Bethel Public
Safety Station. Eugene Cultural Services supports WAB with the first of the Summer
Concerts in the Parks and Eugene Public Library also kicks off its Summer Ready
Program that day.
This year’s Moo Lawn Rouge theme promises lots of laughs and great entertainment
at this free, fun, family event. Don’t miss the performance by Vagabond Opera, the
first of eight free Summer Concerts in the Parks. The celebration also includes a
Youth Circus Carnival (25¢ tickets), a can can race station, potato sack race, hoop
stick race, bicycle parade, prizes throughout the day, performances by Bethel School
District students, community booths, and food vendors. For more information, contact

Celebrate Good Times
Congratulations to the 120 people who participated in the fourth annual Out in the Artdoors Urban Adventures
Race on Saturday, May 9. Presented by the Recreation Division, this race gives residents a unique opportunity to
connect with their community, environment and City government. Throughout this community-building race, teams
had the opportunity to choose a series of challenges while navigating a scavenger hunt-style course on bicycle,
with the focus of the events being on art and/or outdoor activities in Eugene. One of the stops, at Fire Station #2,
required contestants to dress in turnouts and get a taste of the rigors of Fire Department training.
The event itself requires community spirit and collaboration by
many partners and volunteers who help run and/or provide
equipment at each race station. A special thanks to:

Mo Hull and the Eugene Fire Paramedics who ran the fire
station at 2nd and Chambers.

The Westmoreland Disc Golf Club, for running the disc golf
station at Westmoreland Park.
?
The Emerald Horseshoe Pitching Association, for running
the horseshoe station at Washington/Jefferson Park.
?
Lane County Ice, for providing the facility and supporting
the ice skating station.
?
The BMX Track Club for providing space for the BMX track
station.
?
Sue Harnly and the Eugene Coffee Company baristas, for
providing space for the Beat Poetry station.
?
The Bicycle Transportation Alliance, for use of bikes for
participants.
?
UO Outdoor Program and Willamalane Parks and Recreation, for providing additional GPS units for
participants.
?
Arthur and Anita Jones, a real race team from the Amazing Race TV show, who reside in Eugene; Arthur
also works in Public Works.
?
All of the Recreation staff and community centers that provided resources toward this great adventure.
