Both incidents, which happened within 20 minutes of each other, were addressed with skill and professionalism by Echo Hollow Pool personnel. The lifeguard staff assessed the situation quickly and administered oxygen to each swimmer. Emergency Services was called and arrived at the facility within five to seven minutes after each incident. Echo Hollow Pool’s staff is to be commended for the sound execution of the Emergency Action Plan. Exceptional leadership was displayed by Recreation employees Cortez Jordan, Roi Gershom, Evan Mohr, and Willie Lewis. Recreation Service’s focus on safety, vigilance and training was a key factor in the positive way these situations were handled. For more information, contact Aquatics Manager Rich Fay at 682-5331. Executive Manager Selected for National Leadership Program Planning and Development Executive Manager Susan Muir has been selected to participate in the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Leadership Program. The new, intensive two-year program is designed to cultivate key competencies needed for successful leadership at all levels of local government management. Key competencies to be developed within “Leadership ICMA” include: personal leadership; ethics and integrity; analytical skills; strategic planning; community building; effective policy and administration; media relations; and organizational effectiveness. ICMA is the leading organization for information on professional local government management. Its membership includes city managers, county managers, and other chief appointed officials and assistants in local governments throughout the world. ICMA’s mission is to create excellence in local government by developing and fostering professional local government management worldwide. From the national membership roll, only 13 individuals were selected to participate in the first ever ICMA leadership program. Muir, who has been with the City of Eugene for two years, was recently selected as Executive Manager for the Planning and Development Department. She oversees a department of over 100 employees in three divisions: Building and Permit Services, Community Development and Planning. “This is a great opportunity for me to learn new skills and bring them back to the City of Eugene; I'm really looking forward to participating in this." EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1 March 3, 2006 City Manager Elected to Board of Directors for Statewide Organization City Manager Dennis Taylor has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Oregon City/County Management Association. The 12-member board of the organization is comprised of Oregon city and county managers, chief city administrators, assistants to city and county managers and administrators, and academics professionally interested in local government in Oregon. The association exists to provide professional support to city and county managers in the state of Oregon. This support includes continuing education on leading-edge management practices, networking through meetings, conferences, help and advice from mentors and retired managers, and advice and help on ethical dilemmas. “I look forward to serving on the Board of Directors for this fine organization,” said Dennis Taylor. “This organization enhances each practitioner’s skills and abilities, and also benefits the residents of the many communities of Oregon as we all work together in our American democracy.” Taylor joins the board with other city managers from cities including Sisters, Troutdale, Estacada, Sandy, Cottage Grove, Wilsonville and Central Point. Classes on Introduction to Computers Part Iand Part II and Introduction to the Internet I, will be joined by Introduction to the Internet Part II. The new class covers searching and surfing, how to protect yourself from scams and spam, and more. To help everyone get the most out the Library’s computer resources, from basic to advanced, EPL is also adding one-on-one instruction available in English or Spanish. Popular topics include: • Setting up and using a free e-mail account • Using the Library catalog • Finding magazine and newspaper articles (EBSCO) • Databases for readers (NoveList, Contemporary Authors, Books-in-Print) • Business research (ReferenceUSA, General Business File, EBSCO) • Foundation and grant research (Foundation Directory) • Career research (Oregon Career Information Systems) • Genealogy research (HeritageQuest) • Health research (PeaceHealth, EBSCO) Computer instruction is free, but pre-registration is required (in person or by phone).
