A RESOLUTION RENAMING STRIKER FIELD PARK TO UMSO PARK.
The City Council of the City of Eugene finds that:
A. Striker Field is a community park located at Grand Cayman Drive and Antigua
Drive in Eugene, Oregon, which opened in 2023. The park is identified as Striker Field in the
"Picture. Plan. Play. A Vision and Implementation Plan for Eugene's Parks and Recreation
System" adopted by City Council Resolution No. 5239.
B. The name "Striker Field" is associated with a sports field concept that at one time
was thought to be the future development plan for this 8-acre park. However, following
residential development in the surrounding area, it was determined that a park that more directly
serves the immediate neighborhood and community residents was more appropriate. Throughout
the public design process to develop a concept plan for such a park the community expressed a
desire to adopt a name more suitable for the new development plan.
C. In November of 2020, a public re-naming process was initiated in accordance
with the existing City Naming Policy for Park Lands and Features, which included public
nominations of potential names, followed by voting by the public. In December 2021, the voting
was completed, and the top selection was for a name recognizing local Native American groups
and languages. The City thereafter consulted with local tribes to determine whether a Native
American name is suited to the location and, if so, what name would be appropriate.
D. After consulting with local tribes, it was decided that Umso Park would be an
appropriate name for Striker Field. Umso is the Kalapuya word for "it is good," and reflects the
community's values of acknowledging and honoring the Kalapuya tribe.
NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EUGENE, a
Municipal Corporation of the State of Oregon, as follows:
Section 1. The park formerly named "Striker Field" is hereby renamed to "Umso Park".
Section 2. The City Manager is directed to revise City plans and documents to reflect this
name change as such plans and documents are updated in due course.

Section 3. This Resolution 1s effective immediately upon its passage by the City
Council.
The foregoing Resolution adopted the 18 th day of September, 2024.
