Mayor Piercy opened the June 8, 2015, City Council meeting.
A. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG
Mayor Piercy read an excerpt of a Flag Day proclamation by President Obama and Cindy Clarke, Martin Lewis, Ray Brown, Rodney Stewart, Jed McGuire, and Michael Klews, representing the City’s labor unions, led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag in honor of Flag Day on June 14.
B.
PUBLIC FORUM
1. Jolene Siemsen – supported transportation improvements along River Road corridor. 2. Mary McCollough – opposed location of Sponsors housing development near Acorn Park. 3. Kimberly Gladen – supported efforts to curb smoking but said it’s a futile endeavor. 4. Lorene Hunt – spoke about parking problems associated with affordable housing development. 5. Andrea Papadimitriou – opposed to ban on smoking; unfairly targets homeless community. 6. Josephine Co – opposed location of Sponsors housing development near Acorn Park. 7. Steve Brigham – spoke to justice aspect of proposed smoking ban; trying to push homeless out. 8. Jason “Moe” Buckley – said proposed smoking ban would have negative economic impact. 9. Jeffrey Keim – opposed smoking ban, noting it would violate a person’s civil rights. 10. Aaron Mitchell - said banning smoking downtown would result in no appreciable health benefit. 11. Charles Hibberd – said a smoking ban will have a negative effect on downtown businesses.
Council discussion:
• Councilor Clark encouraged Ms. Hunt to contact him, as the problem she spoke about is occurring in his ward.
C. CONSENT CALENDAR
MOTION AND VOTE: Councilor Syrett, seconded by Councilor Brown, moved to approve the items on the consent calendar. PASSED 6:0
D. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Police Commission, South Willamette Economic Development
Corporation, Lane Transit District EmX Steering Committee, McKenzie Watershed Council
• The Police Commission is drafting its work plan and discussing the issue of citizens filming police activity.
• South Willamette Economic Development Corporation is operating under an interim director until a permanent executive director is named. There is a significant amount of economic development activity and interest in the area.
• LTD is doing a lot of community outreach related to EmX.
• A meeting of the McKenzie Watershed Council is scheduled for June 11.
