Mayor Piercy opened the July 29, 2015, City Council work session.
A. ACTION: Interim Appointments to the Citizen Planning Committee of the Whilamut Natural
Area of Alton Baker Park
MOTION AND VOTE: Councilor Syrett, seconded by Councilor Taylor, moved to appoint Nancy
Bray to the Citizen Planning Committee of the Whilamut Natural Area of Alton Baker Park for
an unexpired term ending on June 30, 2016. PASSED 5:0
MOTION AND VOTE: Councilor Syrett, seconded by Councilor Taylor, moved to appoint Erin
Walker to the Citizen Planning Committee of the Whilamut Natural Area of Alton Baker Park
for an unexpired term ending June 30, 2017. PASSED 520
B. WORK SESSION: Council Workshop Follow -Up
Jon Ruiz, Mia Cariaga, Kurt Corey, Pete Kerns, Glenn Klein, Sarah Medary, Randall Groves and Rene
Grube of the Executive Team gave a PowerPoint presentation and led a discussion on the council
workshop topics of homelessness and economic prosperity.
Council discussion on homelessness:
• How the City and City Council communicate about this issue has a lot to do with how it is
received in the community.
• Need to look into ways to help with impacts on businesses.
• Consider liability issues that could come up if social service agencies are sent to help.
• Support Operation 365/Housing First models; work with other jurisdictions to coordinate
efforts.
Council discussion on economic prosperity:
• Care should be taken to avoid duplication of efforts.
• Need to work cooperatively with other jurisdictions and organizations.
• Add education as an important area of focus and impact.
• More conversations with the UO needed to help with development.
• Work on telling the City's story; take communication efforts to the next level.
