1. WORK SESSION: 2021 Update
Library, Recreation and Cultural Services Director Renee Grube and Oregon 2021 Project Lead
Stephanie Scafa updated the council on the current progress of plans for Eugene to host the
2021 World Track and Field Championships.
Discussion
o Councilor Yeh - asked whether there would be a public art committee and
recommended including someone with a human rights and art history background who
can consider the differences between public and private art; asked about how many
more murals were planned around the city.
o Councilor Zelenka - asked staff to contrast this event with the Olympic Trials event;
asked about expected attendance and plans for transportation between the Riverfront
Park and Hayward Field as well as transportation challenges that may arise in nearby
neighborhoods; asked about the event budget and what the City's portion is expected to
be; asked about housing plans.
o Councilor Pryor - thought the incident command model would be helpful for the event;
asked about the preparation for risks, logistics —especially for food and lodging —and
financial considerations in an event of this scale.
o Mayor Vinis - expressed excitement about the event and asked how the event might
provide an educational opportunity for local schools; asked whether the event could
provide an opportunity to experiment with transportation system innovations.
The meeting adjourned at 12:39 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
