WORK UNDER WAY ON AMAZON PATH REHABILITATION PROJECT

Fire & EMS Department Prepares for Lane County Fair
The Lane County Fair begins next week, and the Fire & EMS
Department will again be providing first aid, emergency
response, and public education at the venue. During the
fair’s run, August 18-23, the department’s on-site resources
will be based northeast of the Lane County Ice building. At
all times when the fair is open, Fire & EMS will provide an
on-duty engine company (fire engine and three firefighters)
and two EMTs including at least one paramedic. The Lane
County Fair has contracted with the department to pick up
the cost of providing the EMTs, so the City will not incur any
overtime obligation. First aid for fairgoers will be available
in an air-conditioned building with two treatment areas and a
private bathroom. Outside, there will be a display tent and
the fire engine. Truck ½, a Cushman-type motorized cart,
will also be available for on-site response, depending on the

Work Under Way on Amazon Path Rehabilitation Project
The Amazon Path rehabilitation project is well under way, which means a majority of the Amazon Path is closed

from 19 to 31 avenues. Starting today, August 13, KSM Construction, working under contract to the Eugene
Public Works Department, will start working on the concrete

path section from South Eugene High School to 24 Avenue,
adjacent to the South Eugene High South baseball diamonds
and the Amazon Park softball diamonds. This section of the
path will be closed until construction is completed. Today, if
th
weather permits, a short section of the path starting at 19
Avenue, adjacent to South Eugene High School, is scheduled
for new asphalt.
During the next week, the contractor is scheduled to pour new
concrete path on several sections of path, including the
intersection at the Amazon LTD bus stop/dog park/skate park,

from the dog park south to 31 Avenue, and a 2200-foot

section from 24 Avenue to the Amazon Pool area. These
sections of path likely will be reopened later in August.

The 40-year-old path was built in the 1970s on an unstable, expansive-clay subsurface. The ground underneath
the path expands during the winter when the ground is wet and then contracts when the ground dries out in the
summer. As a result, the path has developed numerous cracks, sunk, and heaved, creating potential hazards for
path users. The rehabilitation project corrects this problem. The project is funded by the five-year general
obligation (property tax) bond measure approved by Eugene voters in November 2008, to fix city streets and local
bike paths. The bond measure is designed to fix approximately 70 lane-miles of streets and three miles of off-
street bike and pedestrian paths. The path projects for the bond measure were selected by City staff and the
Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) based on a pavement evaluation system and usage data.

MultiCultural Festival Builds Community
An enthusiastic crowd of more than 500 people attended last
week’s MultiCultural Festival, presented by the Recreation
Services’ Youth and Family Program in collaboration with
more than 30 community partners. The free event included
food from around the world, fun activities for the entire family,
and diverse live music and entertainment, including youth Hip
Hop performers, King’s Krew.
The MultiCultural Festival is one of four free community
events presented by the Recreation Division in the spirit of
building community and encouraging family fun at little or no
cost to participants. The other three festivals are April Pool’s
Day, We Are Bethel Celebration, and the Whitaker Neighborhood River Festival. For more information about the
