ISSUE STATEMENT
This is a brief update on H1N1 Influenza and what the City of Eugene is doing to prepare. No action is
being requested from the City Council.
BACKGROUND
H1N1 was declared a pandemic in 2009 by the World Health Organization. Lane County Public Health
is the lead agency for health-related emergencies such as a pandemic influenza in Lane County. The
City has established an H1N1 Task Force with representatives from each department to guide
preparation and communication activities within the organization. In addition, the City’s Emergency
Manager serves on an interagency team with representatives from local health care providers, including
Lane County Public Health, the hospitals, schools and EMS service providers.
The City’s Emergency Plan includes a pandemic annex to guide the City’s preparation for and response
to a pandemic flu.
