Award Winning WestTown on 8 Example of “Intelligent Cooperation”

The affordable housing development, WestTown on 8, recently received an Honor Award from the Northwest &
Pacific Region of the American Institute of Architects. The institute noted that the winners of this year’s awards
were examples of “beautiful designs within a limited budget,” that are, “true assets to their community.” The award
was presented to Vallaster Corl Architects and Metro Affordable Housing Corporation for “professional excellence”
and “intelligent cooperation.”

WestTown on 8 is a residential development in
downtown Eugene. The $20 million development
includes 102 rental units affordable to households
earning below 60% of Area Median Income and
nine market-rate live-work units. The

development is located at 265 West 8 Avenue
next to the historic Woodmen of the World Hall
(WOW Hall). The developer, Metropolitan
Affordable Housing Corporation, aligned an array
of city, state, and federal resources to make this
project possible. The City of Eugene selected
Metro to develop the landbank site through a
competitive Request for Proposals process. In
addition, the City of Eugene contributed federal HOME funds, systems development charge waivers, a 20-year
local tax exemption, and a short-term loan. The project is designed to fit with adjacent buildings, use land
efficiently, and provide residents with multiple amenities such as an interior raised courtyard. For more

Strategic Neighborhood Action Plan Workshop
The City of Eugene Planning Division will hold a public workshop on neighborhood planning in Eugene focusing on
Strategic Neighborhood Action Plans on Wednesday, December 2,from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Eugene Public

Library, 100 West 10 Avenue, 1 Floor, Bascom-Tykeson Room.
A Strategic Neighborhood Action Plan (SNAP) provides a neighborhood, or otherwise geographically defined area,
with an opportunity and the tools and framework to create a vision for their future and to develop strategies to
achieve that vision. During the workshop staff will present the SNAP model. This will be followed by break-out
sessions and time for feedback and questions. Preliminary results from the Eugene Neighborhood Survey will be

included in the presentation.

Aquatics Program Offers “Turkey Burn” Class
Recreation Services’ Aquatics Program is offering special “Turkey Burn” adult water fitness classes to help
participants burn off all the turkey and trimmings from the holiday.
Turkey Burn is offered on Saturday, November 28, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m., at Echo Hollow Pool, and Sheldon Pool.

Joe Manis Jazz Trio Performs on First Friday
The Downtown Eugene Public Library hosts a free concert by the Joe Manis Jazz Trio on First Friday, December
4, at 6:00 p.m. The trio, featuring Joe Manis on tenor sax, Dave Captein on bass, and Randy Rollofson on drums,
will perform traditional jazz standards plus selections from their new recording, Evidence.
These accomplished musicians play regionally and worldwide, performing individually in a variety of genres with
artists ranging from the Daddies and Thomas Mapfumo, to Bucky Pizzarelli and Wynton Marsalis. This event is
sponsored by the Eugene Public Library, Friends of the Library, and the Eugene Public Library Foundation. For

Climate and Energy Public Forum Covers Land Use and Transportation Issues
A public forum will be held on Tuesday, December 1, to discuss land use and transportation issues and how they
impact the community’s greenhouse gas emissions and its ability to respond to rising fuel prices and climate
change. The meeting is the third of six public forums to be held as part of the development of the Community
Climate and Energy Action Plan. The forum is scheduled for 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the meeting rooms at EWEB, 500
East 4th Avenue. Last month about 80 community members attended the public forum on food and agriculture and
provided valuable input on what actions community members, governments, businesses and other organizations
can take to better mitigate, and adapt to, the impacts of climate change and rising fuel costs. To learn more, visit
