Primary Election Season Underway
The next regularly scheduled election in Eugene is the May 18, 2010, Primary Election.
The May Primary is a qualifying election that will determine which names appear on the
November 2, 2010 General Election ballot. For each ward or EWEB Board office, the
candidate who receives more than 50 percent of the total vote will have his or her name
placed on the November ballot. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the
vote in the May primary, the names of the two candidates receiving the most votes will
be placed on the November ballot.
Completed nominating petitions for the following offices will be accepted by the City Recorder’s Office until 5 p.m.
on March 4, 2010:
Eugene City Councilor – Ward 3
Eugene City Councilor - Ward 4
Eugene City Councilor - Ward 5
Eugene City Councilor - Ward 6
EWEB Commissioner - Wards 4 and 5
EWEB Commissioner - At-Large
An information packet for prospective candidates is available on the City Recorder’s Office web page at
www.eugene-or.gov/elections. The packet contains a calendar of important dates and deadlines, instructions on
how to file, links to resource information, and sample forms required for filing.

Valentine's Day Events Emphasize Companionship
Older adults and individuals with developmental disabilities can find
companionship at one of two Valentine's Day events being held by the Recreation
Program. Speed Dating, for adults age 50 and older, confirms that it’s never too
late to find companionship. At this event on February 9, 6 - 8 p.m. at Campbell
Center, attendees can socialize with other older adults who want to connect with
someone special. Whether looking for love or just friendship, this is the perfect

place to re-enter the dating scene. Speed dates are four minutes long and include refreshments and snacks. For

Also on February 9, adults age 18 and older, who are experiencing developmental disabilities, are invited to a
night of music, dancing and refreshments, from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Hilyard Center. For more information, please call

Left Coast Sax Quartet to Play Free Concert at Library
The Left Coast Saxophone Quartet will play a free concert at the
Downtown Public Library on First Friday, February 5, at 6 p.m.
The quartet pools the talents of Rich Berg, Charlene Decker,
Annalisa Morton, and Jonathan Neher to play everything from
ragtime to baroque, classical to klezmer, not to mention Latin and
jazz. Local audiences will recognize these expert musicians from
the Eugene Symphony, Oregon Mozart Players, Swingin’
Marmalukeys, and more. But, the group says, “You’ve never heard
us like this!”

City of Eugene and 4J Schools Awarded “Safe Routes to School” Infrastructure Grant
Recognizing the need for safer pedestrian crossing facilities and improved bicycle infrastructure, Oregon’s
Department of Transportation recently announced a $495,000 award of federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS)
funding for the City of Eugene.
Eugene’s grant is one of only eight awarded statewide for the 2010 and
2011 SRTS grant cycle. In a collaborative effort, faculty and parents
from seven elementary and middle schools, 4J’s SRTS coordinator, and
Eugene Public Works staff worked to develop a number of safety
improvements designed to create a safer and more bike- and pedestrian-
friendly environment for children walking and biking to school. Projects
include crosswalk enhancements, path and sidewalk improvements, new
bicycle parking facilities, and way-finding signs. Design and construction
will occur between 2010 and 2011.

Improving Safety One Helmet at a Time
Over the past three years, the City of Eugene’s Transportation Planning Team has donated more
than 100 helmets per year to the community at targeted events such as the annual Project
Homeless Connect and to children at a number of affordable housing developments. Carrying on
and expanding this tradition of providing free safety equipment for bicyclists, the Transportation
Planning Team recently received a grant to fund the purchase of additional helmets to reach even
more people in need. Grant funding is made available through the Association for Community
Traffic Safety (ACTS), based in Salem. For more information, contact Lindsay Selser at
