Rayna Luvert, outreach program coordinator at Campbell Community Center, has found seniors often also need help with other issues such as health, housing and legal problems. To help seniors get the information they need about local services, Luvert teamed up with local social agencies, Lane County and City of Eugene experts, and professional providers to develop several different series of presentations. The Social Services Series, offered for the first time this fall, consists of free presentations on energy assistance, health insurance benefits, legal advice, low-cost housing options, senior companion programs, and senior and disabled services. Lisa Barrong of the Eugene Police Department presented the Rayna Luvert with Campbell Center volunteer Robert Safety for Seniors Series, providing information to seniors about Pucket simple, hands-on steps they can take to create a safer home environment and reduce the likelihood of being a victim of crime. The City’s Health and Fitness Director, Steve Auferoth, presented a series of presentations on health issues of most concern to seniors. A representative of WilloughbyHearing Aid Centers presented a series on Hearing Health. For more information, contact Rayna Luvert at 541-682-6294. City Telecommunications Staff Moderating New Age of Wireless Panel th Pam Berrian has been tapped to develop and moderate a New Age of Wireless panel at the 15 Annual Oregon Connections Telecommunication Conference, October 21-22, in Hood River. The conference draws attendees from all regions of Oregon, as well as out-of-state professionals. The 2010 conference presenters and attendees will explore the importance and value of broadband telecommunications for business, government, education, healthcare, public safety, and communities and individuals, and the renewed interest in broadband funding, technologies and applications. Steven M. Bass, president and CEO of Oregon Public Broadcasting, is the keynote speaker. EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1 October 14, 2010 Anonymous Appreciation for a Job Well Done th News from the work site, provided by Doug Singer, project manager for the West 18 paving job (City View to east of Chamber Street), is that Knife River staff found a th thank-you card taped to a traffic control device on the West 18 project. Despite all the delays, lane shifts and street closures, staff is being praised by the public for their work. All City employees should take this as a compliment. One of the road crew said, “I have a smile on my face as I leave work today due to this card.” The card read: “Dear Road Crew – Thank you for all the time and effort you invested th into repaving this section of West 18! The new road is a huge improvement on what used to be a veritable mine field of potholes. Now I can take those first sips of hot tea on my way and work without fear of spillage It was definitely worth all the road blocks  and lane-swapping for this super smooth road! Mike Birbiglia Performs “Painfully True Stories” at Eugene Public Library Smart. Insightful. Amazingly honest. Hilariously funny. Real-life storyteller and stand-up comedian Mike Birbiglia will perform a free show at the Downtown Eugene Public Library on Sunday, October 24, at 1:00 p.m. Birbiglia’s comedic, confessional tales brilliantly explore the many awkward and complicated situations that arise in real life. Touching on everything from being bullied in school, to romantic relationships, to family dynamics – not to mention tumors, car accidents, sleepwalking, and disastrous stand-up gigs – Birbiglia skillfully delivers both laughter and meaning. According to The New York Post, “People often say they don't know whether to laugh or to cry, but [at Birbiglia’s show] the choice is easy. You'll do both.” Birbiglia’s successful off-Broadway show, “Sleepwalk with Me,” was praised as “simply perfect” by The New York Times and named Comedy of the Year by Time Out New York. A Comedy Central favorite, Birbiglia has three solo specials to his credit, including “What I Should Have Said Was Nothing.” The Onion AV Club named his CD “My Secret Public Journal Live” one of the best comedy albums of the decade. Birbiglia is a regular contributor to This American Life and The Bob & Tom Radio Show. He has also appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, The View, and the Late Show with David Letterman. Birbiglia is on national tour with his first book, “Sleepwalk With Me And Other Painfully True Stories.” At his Eugene Public Library show, the book will be available for purchase and signing courtesy of the University of Oregon Bookstore/Duck Store. Calling All Interns and Volunteers The City Manager’s Office at the Atrium has created a new public webpage designed to recruit interns and volunteers who want to work with Neighborhood Services, the Office of Sustainability and the Equity and Human Rights Center. While each of these work groups has an independent work program, staff coordinate community events, outreach and participation, education and trainings, information and referral, support for City boards and commissions, and much more. Interns and volunteers are a critical part of making these important work projects happen. They offer additional perspectives and ideas, special skills and extra attention to deserving projects and efforts. In turn, they are provided an opportunity to develop new skills, work alongside a team of passionate and innovative professionals, and contribute to making a difference in our community. Some of the successes interns and volunteers have contributed to these programs have included assisting with the Human Rights Summit, Strategic Neighborhood and Assessment (SNAP), Eugene Neighborhood Survey, Community Climate and Energy Action Plan, and the Anti-Hate Forum.
