Envision Eugene Open Houses Present Goals and Strategies for Future Growth
Two open houses over the next two weeks will provide opportunities for people to learn how their input has shaped
draft strategies for Eugene’s growth and a chance to offer feedback. The Envision Eugene Open Houses will be
held:
Feb. 3, 2011, 4 – 7 p.m., North Eugene High School Library, 200 Silver
Lane
Feb. 10, 2011, 4 – 7 p.m. Roosevelt Middle School Cafeteria, 680 East
24th Avenue
Participants can learn more about the draft proposal which will be available prior to the open house. The open house
events are designed to explain the proposed draft strategies and solicit public feedback. The public can also offer
feedback through the Envision Eugene website at www.EnvisionEugene.org.

Open Houses and Public Hearing Scheduled on West Eugene EmX
The Joint Locally Preferred Alternative Committee, including representatives from the Eugene City Council,
Metropolitan Planning Committee, and the Lane Transit District Board (LTD), is scheduled to reach a preliminary
recommendation on Jan. 31 on a preferred alternative to extend EmX bus rapid transit service to West Eugene. In
order for the public to have an opportunity to learn more about this preliminary locally preferred alternative, and to
provide feedback to the decision-makers, open houses are scheduled for Feb. 1 and Feb. 8. A joint public hearing
will be held immediately after the open house on Feb. 8. The Joint Locally Preferred Alternative Committee is then
expected to select its final recommendation at the group’s Feb. 14 meeting.
At the Feb. 8 public hearing, a quorum of all three decision-making bodies will be in attendance. This will give the
public an opportunity to address all the decision-makers at one meeting, and give the decision-makers an opportunity
to hear the testimony and discussion.

Thewill be held at the Eugene Hilton, 66 East Sixth Avenue.
The open house runs from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m., and the joint public hearing is from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m.
After meeting with businesses, property owners, and residents, LTD has found ways to lessen many of the impacts
along the proposed alignments. Creative strategies include operating a portion of the route in mixed traffic, changing
course slightly to avoid trees, and other ideas that reduce or eliminate impacts on many properties. Check out the

February Human Rights Project Training on Track
The City of Eugene’s Human Rights Commission will host a human rights framework training on Tuesday, Feb. 15,
from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m., at Studio One in the Hult Center. Eugene is among select cities pioneering the
implementation of a human rights framework into City programs and policies and community organizing. In bringing
together the Mayor and City Council with advisory body members, the Human Rights Commission hopes to increase
knowledge of the human rights framework, as well as create a network of informed leaders able to represent human
rights principles in their respective areas.
Internationally recognized trainers Ejim Dike, human rights project director for the Urban Justice Center in New York
City, and Anu Menon and Emily Murase from the Status of Women Department in San Francisco, will lead the
training. Dike has worked on social policy issues for more than 10 years and in the domestic human rights arena for
the past eight years. Her human rights work focuses on addressing poverty and discrimination using a human rights
framework. Under her leadership, the Human Rights Project at the Urban Justice Center has championed an annual
report card on the human rights record of New York City Council members. Menon and Murase have been
instrumental in groundbreaking work in San Francisco which was the first city in the world to adopt and implement
the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
The training is open to Eugene City Councilors, and all City board, committee and commission and members. For

Upcoming Events - Save the Dates
Asian Celebration - Lane County Fairgrounds, Feb. 19 and 20: The City of Eugene
will have a robust presence with a total of four booths at the Asian Celebration, two
for overall City services, a booth for Eugene Police and a booth that will be shared by
Fire/EMS and Fire Med. Every year this family-oriented event comes alive with food,
music, dance, vendors, drummers and martial arts displays, and it never disappoints
event-goers. Save the date for a weekend of fun, music, dance and food. For more

Project Homeless Connect - Lane County Fairgrounds, Mar. 17: The fifth annual Project Homeless Connect (PHC)
event will begin on Thursday, Mar. 17, at the Lane County Fairgrounds. The event will connect guests with services
they need but may not be able to afford or didn’t know about. Hundreds of volunteers and community donors will
come together to make this one-day event possible.
Some of the services and items available at PHC are free haircuts, photographs, pet
food and veterinary care, dental clinics, medical care, confidential counseling, veterans’
services, bicycle repair, and body work such as massage and reiki. A family area will
feature toys, children’s items, books and children’s supplies. The adult area will provide
backpacks, sleeping bags, clothing, socks and shoes, and much more to anyone in
need, as supplies last. In addition to all of these services, guests will enjoy a free breakfast and lunch, and live music
