The project came about as a joint effort between representatives from the Public Art Committee, David Joyce’s widow, Kacey Joyce, and staff at the Eugene Airport. The artwork has been deteriorating for several years, including yellowing and delaminating of some of the art. This fall, airport facilities staff found leaks in the south-facing wall of the A- concourse, the exterior side of the wall that currently holds the artwork. Construction to repair the leaking fascia on the building will happen over the summer, at which time the artwork will be taken down. Meanwhile, the original negatives will be used to transfer the same images onto metal, which will provide a long-lasting surface for the artwork. In addition to the repairs to the works of art, windows willbe added to the south A-concourse wall, to mirror the windows on the north side. This will lighten up the space which has been very dark in the winter months. Ms. Joyce plans to reconfigure the work of art on the south and north walls of the concourse. The rehabilitation of “Flight Patterns” will be paid for from 1% for Art funds set aside in the construction of the Air Cargo Building and the Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Station. The exact cost of the fabrication, and timeline for production of the new art pieces, is not yet known. EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1 March 17, 2011 Spring Break for Kids and Teens at Eugene Public Library While school is out, fairytales and fantasy are in at the Eugene Public Library. Spring Break brings a fun puppet show for children and a screening of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” for teens. Admission is free. What happens when two classic tales get twisted together? Kids will find out at Dragon Theater Puppets’ “Rapunzel Redeems Rumpelstiltskin.”Catch theshow on Wednesday, Mar. 23, at 11 a.m., at the Bethel Branch Library or 2 p.m. at Sheldon Community Center. On Thursday, Mar. 24, there will be two performances at the Downtown Library, at 1 and 3 p.m. Free tickets can be picked up 30 minutes in advance of each performance for the Downtown Library shows. On Tuesday, Mar. 22, at 2 p.m., teens are invited to the Downtown Library to enjoy “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” and snacks. Petersen Barn Seniors Lead Active Life It has been a busy week for seniors at Petersen Barn Community Center. Among the activities was a rousing game of Wii virtual bowling and a movie matinee featuring the film “Burlesque,” starring Cher and Christina Aguilera who depict aging burlesque dancers. More than 60 seniors are expected to be wearing green to the highlight event of the week, Pete Barn’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner of – what else – traditional corned beef and cabbage, plus all the “fixins,” and entertainment throughout the evening. Seniors can round out the week on Saturday with the monthly Barn Dance, featuring the Country Crossings Band, from 7:00 - 9:30 p.m. For more information about all the activities for seniors at Petersen Barn, call Diane Sconce at 541-682-5521. Kakegawa Youth Delegation Visits; Outreach to Japan Underway A delegation of high school students from Kakegawa, Japan, arrives in Eugene on Sunday, Mar. 20, for a week-long visit. Kakegawa is one of Eugene’s four sister cities and delegation exchanges are a vital part of our sister city relationships. The students will visit Mayor Kitty Piercy on Monday, Mar. 21, for a 10 a.m. gathering at Eugene City Hall, 777 Pearl Street. The delegation’s visit will close with a farewell dinner on Friday, Mar. 25. At the dinner, students will give short speeches and share their thoughts about the recent events in Japan. According to Jim Knepler, president of the Eugene-Kakegawa Sister City Committee (EKSCC), Eugene’s members have been closely monitoring the situation in Japan, and have been in contact with friends and family members there. Mike Takahashi, another member of the sister city committee, is heading a fundraising effort for the victims of Japan’s earthquakes and tsunami. Tax-deductible donations may be made to the Japanese-American Association of Lane County, 841 Virgil Avenue, Oregon 97404 (tax ID# 93-1163898). The sister cities program has been part of City of Eugene government since 1961, when Jinju, South Korea, became Eugene’s first sister city. Eugene also has sister city relationships with Kathmandu, Nepal (1975); Kakegawa, Japan (1979); and Irkutsk, Russia (1988). Kakegawa is a city in western Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. As of 2010, the city had an estimated population of 117,858. It is bordered to the south by the Pacific Ocean. Kakegawa has a mixed economy that includes green tea production and processing, as well as several light industrial complexes. Major products include telecommunications equipment and electronics, cosmetics, automotive components and musical instruments. The Kakegawa area has been a regional commercial center, and developed as a castle town. Kakegawa Castle was built in the Bunmei era (1469-1487). EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 2 March 17, 2011 Three Neighborhoods Nominated for National Award The national organization Neighborhoods USA (http://www.nusa.org) has selected a joint entry by three Eugene neighborhood associations as a finalist in the 2011 Neighborhood of the Year competition. Jefferson Westside Neighbors (JWN), South University Neighborhood Association (SUNA) and West University Neighbors (WUN) worked together closely on the organizations’ “Heritage Crescent Neighborhood Livability Project” which culminated with development standards adopted into City code to ensure infill and redevelopment would be compatible with each neighborhood’s character and would contribute positively to the surrounding neighborhood’s livability. The submitted application is available online at http://www.eugene-or.gov/nassociations. By reaching the finalist stage in NUSA’s “Multi-Neighborhood Partnership” category, the three-neighborhood partnership has been invited to send representatives to present their project at NUSA’s annual convention in Anchorage on May 25 - 28. NUSA judges will select winners in three categories and then pick a Grand Prize neighborhood. Founded in 1975, NUSA is the largest non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to sharing information and experiences to build stronger communities. NUSA encourages networking and information sharing as a way to facilitate the development of partnerships between neighborhood organizations, government and the private sector.
