University of Oregon (UO) and Oregon Track Club Elite athletes greeted more than 250 participants, aged five – 12, who sprinted, threw a turbo javelin, long-jumped, and hurdled. They also received their own Oregon Preview bib, ribbon, snack and autograph session. The event was sponsored by the City of Eugene, Oregon Track Club, and University of Oregon Track Club. Elite coach Harry Marra designed the clinic activities. UO Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna called the youth clinic “an excellent way to open up another exciting track season at Hayward Field…just the first of many youth offerings this spring.” He added that throughout the year, the collective efforts of the City of Eugene, UO program, and Oregon Track Club Elite “are exposing thousands of kids to amazing role models, fun activities and the benefits of an active lifestyle." Families who attended the clinic were invited to stay for the meet and had additional opportunities to run, jump and throw in the Starting Block. This youth activity area is organized by Senior Recreation Programmer Kim McManus and encourages youth to be active while learning about the legacy of Track Town. Volunteer Power Workshop at Eugene Public Library The Downtown Eugene Public Library will host “Volunteer Power,” a workshop for volunteer coordinators, on Tuesday, April 12, from 10:30 a.m. until noon. Admission is free. Most non-profits depend on the active involvement of community volunteers. This workshop for new and experienced volunteer coordinators will offer tips and insights for effectively engaging volunteers for success. Topics will include recruiting and matching the right volunteers for each job, giving them constructive feedback, and providing appropriate appreciation. The workshop will be led by the Library’s Customer Experience Manager LaVena Nohrenberg, certified in volunteer administration (CVA), who has 20 years of experience managing volunteers in social services and health care settings. EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1 April 7, 2011 Active Bethel Residents FEAST on Sunday FEAST stands for Food Education Agriculture Solutions Together – a program of the Oregon Food Bank designed to assist local communities in becoming more food self-sufficient. The FEAST event is part of Active Bethel Citizens’ efforts to address food access and security issues in their neighborhood. The program works to connect area farmers, distributors, and consumers to create better access to local, affordable food. Partners include the Active Bethel Citizens neighborhood association, Bethel School District, Community and Schools Together (CAST), Environmental Center of Sustainability (ECOS), South Town Rotary, Lane County Food Policy Council and City of Eugene Neighborhood Services. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, participants will gather at Petersen Barn to learn about local food issues and initiatives, local farming, and steps to creating a community-based food plan. The neighborhood association will collaborate with Neighborhood Services on a SNAP (Strategic Neighborhood Assessment and Planning) project this summer that will focus on these issues. Annual Neighborhood Leader Orientation Not Just Fun and Games “Bob’s Rules,” “Acronyms R Us”, and “Get to Know Your Neighbors” were three Neighborhood Jeopardy categories that failed to stump neighborhood and community leaders last week. Twenty-three participants representing 10 neighborhoods and the Planning and Police commissions attended a three-hour orientation for neighborhoods, City government, and Neighborhood Services programs. Staff led participants in a full and fast-paced evening that included Jeopardy and a version of speed-dating - rapid conversations with multiple people - about engaging neighbors and working effectively with City staff. Participants received an updated Toolkit for Effective Neighborhood Leadership which is available on the City’s website at www.eugene-or.us/naleaders. The neighborhood leader orientation is a key component of the training program provided by Neighborhood Services.
