ONLINE GUIDE USERS GET ENHANCED EXPERIENCE
AROUND THE CITY
Discover “The Hidden Brain” at Eugene Public Library
On Saturday, April 30, at 2 p.m., the Downtown Library will host a free talk by Shankar Vedantam, author of “The
Hidden Brain: How Our Unconscious Minds Elect Presidents, Control Markets, Wage Wars, and Save Our Lives.”
Vedantam’s work explains the powerful impact of stereotypes and prejudices
we don’t realize we hold. Using fascinating real-life examples and the latest
research, he exposes the hidden brain, which directs our decisions without our
awareness. It offers new answers to questions such as how children learn to
be racially biased and why it’s so difficult to teach them otherwise. And why the
public tends to be riveted by the plight of a single puppy, yet quickly bored by
reports of mass human suffering.
According to Vedantam, “The hidden brain decides whom we fall in love with
and whom we hate. It tells us to vote for the white candidate and convict the
dark-skinned defendant, to hire the thin woman but pay her less than the man
doing the same job. It can direct us to safety when disaster strikes and move
us to extraordinary acts of altruism. But it can also be manipulated to turn an
ordinary person into a suicide terrorist or a group of bystanders into a mob.”
Vedantam is a national science writer for The Washington Post, a columnist for Slate, and a Nieman Fellow at
Harvard University. He appears frequently in the media. Books will be available for purchase and signing courtesy of

Online Guide Users Get Enhanced Experience
The newly enhanced online Recreation Guide now features
color and hyperlinks to make viewing and registration a
snap. The 92-page online summer Recreation Guide is as
easy to navigate as the paper version, featuring virtual page
turning and hyperlinks to quickly move from the table of
contents to activity descriptions and from there to the
registration page for most activities with just one click.
Many of the web and email addresses in the online guide
are also quick hotlinks to more information.
The enhanced online guide is part of Recreation Service’s
effort to encourage more Recreation patrons to opt to
receive an email notice when a new guide is available
instead of receiving a paper guide in the mail. Once an

online guide has been accessed, online registration is also easily available 24/7, and secure – all account information
remains private and safe.
Additionally, patrons who register online can see detailed descriptions of activities, their account history and activity
schedules. They can apply scholarships and receive immediate confirmation of registration. Additional information
about activities, such as what to bring or wear, is available to those who choose to print a receipt.
