20-Minute Neighborhoods Open House Planned for July 12
The City of Eugene and Lane Coalition for Healthy Active Youth (LCHAY) will co-host a free public open house on
th
20-minute neighborhoods, July 12, from 4 - 7 p.m., in the lobby of the Atrium Building, 99 W. 10 Avenue, across
from the downtown Eugene Public Library. At the open house, visitors may view a display of recently completed 20-
minute neighborhood maps along with
other intriguing maps describing income
distribution, community health, street tree
canopy cover, pedestrian safety, and
other elements. Join this thought-
provoking evening of discussion centered
on the many influences and impacts of
20-minute neighborhoods in Eugene.
In addition to open discussions, there will
be two scheduled presentations:
5:30 p.m. - A short presentation
providing an overview of the 20-
minute neighborhoods assessment –
with time for questions afterward.
6:00 p.m. – Lane Coalition for
Healthy Active Youth hosts a
screening of the 30-minute film
Unnatural Causes - Place Matters -
with a facilitated discussion
afterward.

Grant to Fund Boater Education Field Kit
The Recreation Division’s Outdoor Program at the River House has been
awarded a $3,000 grant from the Oregon State Marine Board for its boater
education program. The grant, prepared by instructor Merry Petitclair, will be
used to create a “boater education field kit.” The kit will include a laptop,
generator, screen, case and other items needed to teach the Oregon Boater
Education curriculum in the field during classes at the Fern Ridge Reservoir.
The Oregon Boater Education curriculum is part of the program’s youth sailing
and boating program. In the class, students learn the proper use of personal

floatation devices, powerboat and personal watercraft rules, light and sound signals, required and recommended
safety equipment, aids to navigation, how to start, drive, dock and trailer boats, and more.

American Muslim Writer Fatemeh Fakhraie at Eugene Public Library
The downtown Eugene Public Library will host a free talk by Fatemeh Fakhraie at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 16.
Fakhraie is one of 40 essayists who break stereotypes in the new book, “I Speak for Myself: American Women on
Being Muslim.” The anthology brings together a diverse group of women, all born and
raised in the United States, to tell their stories of faith, family, and country.
Fakhraie lives in Corvallis and grew up in Utah with a Mormon mother and a Muslim
father. Today, she embraces Islam with a feminist perspective and runs the Muslimah
Media Watch website, “a forum where Muslim women can critique how our images
appear in the media and popular culture.” Fakhraie writes about Islam, feminism,
politics, and race for print and online journals including Racialicious and AltMuslimah.
This talk is part of Summer Reading 2011 at the Eugene Public Library, a series of
events for all ages united by the theme, “One World, Many Stories.”
