More than $1,800 in prizes will be given away to this year’s winners. In partnership with Travel Lane County, the City of Eugene will be offering additional prizes for the best Eugene images submitted within each contest category. Entries will also be considered for inclusion in publications, websites and promotional outreach. Digital images taken within the boundaries of Lane County may be submitted in the following categories: Arts & Culture, Community Landmarks, Culinary Bounty, For the Birds, Nature's Seasons, Outdoor Adventures and Sports Action. The contest is open to professional and amateur photographers. A youth division is open to youngsters in two age groups: 12 to 17 and 11-and-under. The deadline to enter is September 20, 2011. Communication Experts Peter and Susan Glaser at Eugene Public Library The Downtown Eugene Public Library will host a free talk by communication experts Peter and Susan Glaser about their latest book, “Be Quiet, Be Heard: The Paradox of Persuasion,” on Wednesday, September 7, at 6 p.m. Even with the best of intentions, communication blunders often take a toll on professional and personal lives. Either we overreact, or we avoid the problem, sometimes at great cost to relationships, decisions, and projects. The Glasers teach evidence-based skills that help people work through communication breakdowns – and even create trust through conflict. They provide user-friendly guidelines and practical steps to develop and maintain positive relationships. Peter A. Glaser, Ph.D. and Susan R. Glaser, Ph.D. joined the University of Oregon faculty in 1975. They hold doctorates in Communication from the Pennsylvania State University. The Glasers have been married business partners and co-presenters for 39 years, working with Fortune 500 companies including Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, Weyerhaeuser, Tektronix, Hyundai, and Sony, as well as governments from the local to federal level. New Affordable Housing Development on City View Ready to Proceed Eugene’s first affordable housing project that will test an innovative Passive House design is moving forward. On August 19, St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County (SVDP) was awarded federal low-income housing tax credits (LIHTCs), State General Housing Account Program funds, and Oregon Affordable Housing Tax Credits from Oregon Housing and Community Services (OHCS Notice). The credits and funds will allow SVDP to proceed with the development of Stellar Apartments on City View Street. Stellar Apartments will provide 54 units of affordable, new rental housing to families, individuals, seniors, and veterans earning at or below 50 percent of the Area Median Income based on their family size. The entire development is designed to achieve Earth Advantage certification, which includes energy efficient design and equipment, solar hot water, nontoxic building materials and finishes, and sustainable landscape design. These green features will lower residents’ utility costs and add to the project’s affordability. In addition, the City’s Waste Prevention and Green Building Program and EWEB are providing support to use a Passive House design on part of the project. The City is also funding a University of Oregon life cycle assessment on the benefits of units designed to Earth Advantage versus Passive House standards to determine its usefulness for other affordable housing projects. The Passive House approach has been proven to decrease energy use for heating up to 90 percent without extensive upfront cost increases. The pilot program to improve the energy efficiency of affordable multi-family housing projects furthers the goals of the City’s Community Climate and Energy Action Plan and the Eugene- Springfield 2010 Consolidated Plan. In 2010, the City Council selected SVDP to develop Stellar Apartments on the Westmoreland landbank site and to receive federal HOME funds and Eugene system development charge waivers through a competitive request for proposals process. Now that the tax credits have been awarded, Community Development staff will work with SVDP to transfer ownership of the site and provide federal funds for predevelopment costs. Construction will begin on the site, which is just north of the Westmoreland School, in spring 2012 and will be completed in 2013. For more information, contact Becky L. New Accessible Aquatics Program Offered The City of Eugene Adaptive Recreation Program is offering a new program this fall called “Accessible Aquatics,” that allows individuals with disabilities, as young as six years, to get in Amazon pool to move and relax. The four-week class will feature small groups with staff-to-participant ratio of 1:2, giving participants the assistance they need in the shallow water. The class will meet from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesdays, September 7-28. The cost is $30. For more information and to register, call Carly Schmidt at 541-682-5311. It was designed and programmed by the Information Services eGov team. The new mobile site provides access to key web pages from the City of Eugene website and integrates several popular applications including City Event Calendar, flight status information, employment opportunities, parking ticket payment, library catalog, and RecEnroll. It is available to the general public through a variety of smartphones or small form factor devices such as iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows Mobile devices. If you own a smartphone, you can visit thehome page of the City website and be automatically redirected to the mobile website. New Community Event Rolls into Eugene in September – Volunteers Still Needed Eugene will be sponsoring its first-ever Sunday Streets event on Sunday, September 18, from noon to 4 p.m. Eugene Sunday Streets will be a car-free route that opens a three-mile stretch for people to walk, roll and dance through the streets. This fun, free event for all ages will feature two activity centers along the route at Washington- Jefferson Park and Campbell Community Center. Fun activities at the event will be active and include free fitness classes, yoga, hula hooping, dancing and live music at two stages. Eugene Sunday Streets will be a celebration of the central Eugene area, highlighting the many amenities and local businesses of the neighborhood while promoting healthy activities and active means of transportation. The route will go from the 5th Street Market downtown Sunday Parkways events are popular in Portland to Whiteaker’s Blair District connecting several neighborhoods and local parks. With no designated start or finish, community members of all ages can enjoy the two-way route at their own pace. Sunday Streets is expected to attract 4,000 community members. Although neighbors are encouraged to limit or postpone their driving between noon and 4 p.m. on the day of the event, there will be designated intersections to allow residents to access their homes. To make this first-ever community event a success, almost 200 volunteers are needed!Volunteer opportunities include distributing door hangers, providing information, monitoring intersections, and more.
