Community Sets Events for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday
Community members will celebrate the MLK Holiday in many ways next week. Free activities open to the public
include:

Guest speaker , with music, dance troupes, cake and appetizers at the Eugene Hilton, Sunday, Jan.
15, 5:00 - 7:30 p.m., sponsored by H.O.N.E.Y.
Officer Chris Kilcullen
A march honoring the late , sponsored by the Eugene/Springfield NAACP, Monday, Jan.
16, with 9 a.m. registration, and march at 10 a.m. The march starts at the Science Factory, 2300 Leo Harris
Parkway, and heads to The Shedd, 868 High Street.
Dr. Joseph White
, educator and author of several papers and books including “The Psychology of Blacks,” will be
the keynote speaker Monday, Jan. 16, 5:00 - 6:30 p.m., at the University of Oregon, Erb Memorial Union. The
event also features MLK Community Awards, an award by the Eugene Human Rights Commission to Patricia
Cortez for her work with the Latino community: families and youth, the “All That” Dance Company, poetry and
cake.
MLK Day is best considered a day on (not a day off), as it provides service learning opportunities and a chance to be

No-School-Day Fun at City Pools
Recreation Services is offering kayaking and swimming fun for the no-school-day on
Jan. 16.
Individuals age 11 and older can take indoor whitewater-kayaking lessons from 1 - 3
p.m. at Echo Hollow Pool & Fitness Center, 1655 Echo Hollow Road. Classes are for
any experience level, from beginner to those who have taken a class and want to
learn to roll, improve paddling, and a few other tricks. The cost is $25. Kayaks are
provided.
A no-school-day recreation swim will be held at Sheldon Pool, 2443 Willakenzie Road, from 1:40 - 3:40 p.m., on Jan. 16.
The cost is $3 for youth ages 3 -17 years. For more information, call Rich Fay at 541-682-5525.
Learn to Download eBooks and Audio Books with One-on-One Help at Library
This month, the Eugene Public Library will hold its first “Library2Go: One-on-One Help” session. It’s a drop-in
opportunity to learn how to download thousands of free eBooks, audio books, and videos from the Library.
Drop in at the Downtown Library any time between 4 and 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, to get individual assistance
using Library2Go with an eReader, tablet, smartphone, or notebook computer. Bring a device to use to download from
the Library’s website. Also, for those thinking about purchasing an eReader, a variety of brands will be available to
test-drive.
