Members of boards and commissions provide an invaluable service to the City. They advise the City Council and City staff on a wide variety of subjects by making recommendations on important policy matters. Over the years, the services and programs provided by the City have expanded and the need for citizen input has also increased. Serving on a board or commission can be a rewarding experience for community service-minded residents. Vacancies exist on each of the standing advisory groups that advise the City Council, including the Budget Committee, Civilian Review Board, Human Rights Commission, Planning Commission, Police Commission, Sustainability Commission, Toxics Board and Whilamut Natural Area Citizen Planning Committee. Also recruiting are several departmental and intergovernmental advisory groups including the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency, Library Board and Neighborhood Matching Grants Departmental Advisory Committee. The annual recruitment began this week and will conclude on Friday, March 30. All application materials must be received by that date to be considered for appointment. Applications should be submitted online; however, paper applications and related materials are available at the City Manager’s Office, 777 Pearl Street, Room 105. City Home Show Booth Highlights Harmony and Romance in the Garden What does it take to create a healthy yard or garden? Attendees who stop by Booth 500 at this year's Good Earth Home, Garden and Living Show, can learn plenty of tips from the creative display that features photos and clever personal ad-type language to show how the right combination of plants and soils makes for a healthier, harmonious landscape. This City of Eugene information booth will highlight pHarmony-finding the perfect plant, bHarmony-getting acquainted with beneficial bugs and sHarmony-setting up the ideal soil. To learn more about backyard compost, placing plants in their ideal micro-climate and identifying soil types, come on by. Visitors who participate in a short survey can enter a drawing for practical prizes. The Good Earth Home and Garden show starts Friday, Jan. 20, at 5 p.m., and continues through Sunday, Jan. 22, until 5 p.m. Staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide handouts. The booth is a collaborative effort between the Public Works Stormwater Management Program and Planning and Development’s Waste Prevention and Green Building Program. EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1 January 19, 2012 Snow Has Arrived – Get on It Recreation Services’ Outdoor and Adult programs offer cross-country skiing and snowshoeing classes and excursions January - March. Adults can learn about snowshoes, bindings, footwear and off-trail techniques from professional guide and naturalist Dave Walp. Trips will focus on having fun while practicing backcountry skills and winter safety. Trip dates are Feb. 4 (pre-trip meeting Feb. 1) and Feb. 18 (pre-trip meeting Feb. 15). Families can learn snowshoeing basics and make their first tracks on Family Snowshoe Days on Jan. 28 and Feb. 11. A limited supply of snowshoes is available for loan. For the experienced, snowshoe trips are offered on Jan. 23, Feb. 14, and March 6. Knowledgeable guides will lead these trips on the best trails in the area. Lessons for beginning and intermediate cross-country skiers are offered in February. The beginning class covers skills needed for competent cross-country skiing on- and off-trail. The Level II class is designed to help develop control on hills and efficiency on ups and downs. The Level I class is Feb. 4 (pre-trip meeting Jan. 31). The Level II class is Feb. 11 (pre- trip meeting Feb. 7). Adults can experience beautiful views and bountiful snow on an overnight excursion to Bend March 19 - 21. Participants will stay two nights in Bend, ski or snowshoe near Mt. Bachelor and explore downtown Bend. For more information, go to www.eugene-or.gov/recenroll or call 541-682-5923. Alternative Education Fair at Eugene Public Library Parents, teens, and kids: drop in at the Downtown Eugene Public Library on Saturday, Jan. 28, between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., for the annual Alternative Education Fair. Admission is free. The fair is a great opportunity to learn about alternative education programs in Eugene and Lane County. Find displays and representatives from more than a dozen local private schools, charter schools, Eugene District 4J alternative programs, and home schooling organizations, plus other educational resources available through the Eugene Public Library, including homeschooling information and the online homework center. This event is co-sponsored by the Eugene Public Library and the Eugene Waldorf School.
