There are art camps at Amazon Community Center; Summer Play Adventures including soccer camps, archery, performance arts and science camps at Petersen Barn Center; themed camps that include weekly field trips at Sheldon Community Center; outdoor camps at Wayne Morse Farm that feature outdoor play all day, every day, and weekly field trips, and swimming at Amazon Pool. Aquatic camps focus on competitive swimming, tennis, and water polo at Amazon and Echo Hollow pools. Outdoor camps at River House Center include surfing, sailing, rafting, kayaking, skateboarding, tree climbing, boating, and environmental education. Adaptive Recreation camps at Hilyard Community Center provide activities for youth with disabilities to develop active, healthy, and playful lifestyles and friendships. In addition to these camps, Recreation also presents Fun For All, a free, drop-in playground program that will operate in eight neighborhood parks, Monday - Friday, July 2 – Aug. 24. Food for Lane County will provide a free lunch at seven of the sites. Again this summer, the Eugene Police Department is offering Eugene Police Activity League (EPAL), a summer camp dedicated to promoting positive youth development through athletics, recreation and education. Eugene Participates in National Roundtable on Human Rights The Human Rights Institute at Columbia University’s Law School (New York City) has invited Eugene to participate in a roundtable discussion exploring strategies for local implementation of human rights. The roundtable builds upon the ongoing work of the Human Rights at Home (HuRAH) Campaign – a multi-stakeholder coalition of U.S.-based groups, including human rights, civil rights, civil liberties and social and criminal justice organizations, that advocates for domestic human rights accountability at the federal, state, and local levels. Through a number of initiatives, the campaign works to strengthen human rights in the United States by fostering and expanding partnerships with diverse communities and government agencies and officials and supporting efforts to build human rights into the way government operates. EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1 April 19, 2012 Equity & Human Rights Manager Raquel Wells will join 10 - 20 other government officials and human rights agency representatives and advocates from El Paso, Seattle, New York, Vermont and other jurisdictions later this month for the roundtable. The HuRAH Campaign is covering expenses to make participation possible. The roundtable provides a great opportunity to share information about successes and challenges to enhance government programs and structures, improve accountability and ensure local policies are responsive to community needs. Eugene’s invitation affirms the ongoing efforts of staff, elected officials, advisory group members and local residents to integrate human rights into City operations, policies and deliberations. The City is midway through the five-year Diversity & Equity Strategic Plan, and progress includes refreshed staff training, refined hate and bias response protocol, assessment of language access and interpretation resources, creation of an accessibility coordination plan, development of a self-assessment tool for cultural inclusivity (work and public spaces), renewed Human Rights Commission structure and ordinance, and development of public engagement guidelines. Glitterary Word Festival and Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros at Library On Saturday, Apr. 28, join in a celebration of children, families, and reading at the Glitterary Word Festival and Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros. The Eugene Public Library (EPL) and the Young Writers Association will host active literary arts adventures for all ages. Admission is free. At the Downtown Library at 10 a.m., hear Young Writers Association contest winners read from their works. At 11 a.m., visit Imagination Stations for fun, hands-on activities with artists and writers, including an opportunity to record one’s own writing courtesy of KLCC. Acclaimed writer Gary Soto (photo at right) will lead two writing workshops. His workshop from noon - 1:30 p.m. is for “kids who invite their favorite adults, or adults inviting their favorite kids.” His workshop at 3 p.m. is open to individual adult and teen poets. Both workshops are free-of- charge, with pre-registration required for limited spaces by calling 541-682-5450 (press 2). An additional writing workshop, Families Writing Together, will begin at noon, with no pre-registration required. Family members ages “eight to ancient” are invited to exercise their imaginations with Jesús Sepúlveda, a Chilean poet who teaches at University of Oregon (UO). At 2 p.m., adults and teens are invited to a reading by Gary Soto at the Downtown Library, with books for sale and signing courtesy of the UO Duck Store. Born in California to working class Mexican-American parents, this bilingual writer works in many genres, including poetry, short stories, and children’s books. Soto has won many awards and honors, including being a National Book Award finalist. Tears of Joy Theatre will perform a bilingual, musical puppet play for children and families at the Hult Center at 2 p.m. The show, “When Animals Were People / Fabulas Fabulosas,” brings folktales from Mexico and Argentina to life. Pick up free tickets at the Hult Center lobby starting at noon the day of the show. The Glitterary Word Festival is co-sponsored by the Eugene Public Library, Young Writers Association, Lane Arts Council, Robertson Sherwood Architects, UO Duck Store, City of Eugene, Friends of the Library, and EPL Foundation. . For more information, contact the Eugene Public Library at 541-682-5450 or www.eugene-or.gov/library Governor’s Director of Film and Video Visiting Eugene for Two Public Events Telecommunications Program staff are assisting State Director of the Oregon Film and Video Office Vince Porter with a public information session about an upcoming tax credit auction benefitting Oregon’s Film Production Investment Fund (OPIF). The City has historically supported film production incentives as an economic catalyst that attempts to put Oregon on a level playing field with other states offering even greater incentives for production crews to film in their state with direct benefits to area businesses and film crews. Thanks to the program, the total amount of film and television production spending in Oregon last year was over $100 million, nearly double the previous record. As a result of State legislation, beginning in July 2012, these tax credits will be sold via an online auction. EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 2 April 19, 2012 Mr. Porter will hold the public information session about the auction process in Eugene on Apr. 27, from 4 – 5 p.m. at the Downtown Eugene Library’s second-floor Singer Conference Room. Immediately following, Mr. Porter will meet at the Bijou Art Cinemas with incoming filmmakers from China, Canada, New York, San Francisco, Hawaii, and Los Angeles who are attending screenings of their films at the seventh annual DisOrient, Oregon’s Asian American Film Festival, scheduled for Apr. 27 - 29.
